Yachting in the hamptons

You only have 4 formal anchorages that I know of. That's Sag Harbor (with mooring balls, and 3 on Shelter Island: West Neck Cove and Coecles Harbor with just marked anchorages and Deering Harbor (with mooring balls). However there's a ton of good spots. Sunset Beach (actually Crescent Beach) is the most popular. This is the closest thing to Lake Havesu the Hamptons has. Cedar Pt. has a large party once a year, and there are a few others (like just outside Sag for the 4th's fireworks). Noyack Bay is a real nice and fairly protected spot, but here, like most places in the Hamptons it's a boat here and a boat there. There's also a nice spot on the north end of Robin's Island that's fairly popular. Thankfully we don't have many places where boats jam in one atop the other. That's the joy of having a lot of beach areas.

How about Comorant Point in Hampton Bays.
It is on the south side of the Canal just south of Jacksons Marina.

I have seen a mega yacht tucked in near Robins Island which surprised me because it can get pretty snotty on the Peconic.

Also, 3mile Harbor, all of it!

Shh! We don't want to tell all. I made that mistake 30 to 50 years ago telling upIsland people how I enjoyed living on the east end. Now look at it. We got invaded. When I first started coming to the Hamptons I could buy beer and smokes at Gloria's in WHB as long as I could get my nose over the counter. Now that's a yuppie bakery that goes well with the metrosexual restaurants and galleries. I could also get my boat worked on by someone more concerned with fixing it right than getting rich.

The south Fork has been invaded to Montauk

and the North Fork has been invaded to Orient

just try to go East on Sunrise on a Summer Friday afternoon, or West on a Sunday Afternoon.

These days when I ride my Harley (pre- and wreck and broken foot) I generally go west on weekends since they're all out east.

I only ride the east end on the weekdays....

Overall, 3 mile is a nice place.

It is usually pretty quiet except for when they bring in a fireworks barge for a show, but as far as i know they havent done that in a few years.

I stayed there on the hook during a no name storm a few years ago.

The average depth is about 8 feet in the anchorage area.

You can also use the water toys in designated areas.

There are two decent restaruants on the east side of the bay. The rest of the bay is residential except for the north bay which has a few small boat marinas.

The restaurant to the north east was recently renamed and is pretty decent. I think it used to be called Bostwicks or something like that. You will need a tender or small boat to get into this place.

The other restaurant, i cant remember the name right now but it might be something like East HAmpton Yacht Club or something like that. This place can easilly accomidate 40-60ft transients, although slips are limited. They also have a dingy and fuel dock.

I usually eat at both places at least once or twice a year and i have never had a bad meal at either place.

Overall, 3 mile is a quiet place that is large enough that boats are not on top of each other.

There is a town dock with water and pumpout.

I also like Cochels although the designated anchorage is relatively small.
If you go there check out Rams Head Inn. They have a few moorings for smaller boats (under 40 ft) and a dingy dock for those using the restaurant
