    Welcome home liberty

    Hi Liberty,
I saw you go past my home and boat this morning in that stunning, stunning Hatteras. I heard your horn blow so you obviously must have seen me working on the boat. I ran into the saloon to get a photo but by then you had past. She looked great on the Broadwater and now you know where I live so just drop in anytime!

    Hey George,

Yes we saw you working on your boat and hooted.

We're safely at Runaway Bay and what a trip up. We hit every conceivable weather from Sydney over the 3 days.

Day 1 was 6-8ft swell plus 4-6ft seas (ie occasional 10-12ft waves). 30 knot wind was head on, swell was sidewards. Day 2 was 6-8ft following seas then some horrible confused stuff coming into Coffs. Day 3 was glass smooth.

Boat seakeeping was absolutely incredible. It was really funny, we would all see a huge wave coming and brace for the crash, and then look at each other funny when nothing happened. It was like "what wave?" We sat mostly around 20 knots in the rough stuff and 30 knots when things lightened up.

I was worried how she would cope with big following seas, but we just set the autopilot and left it on. No problems. Half the crew slept through the roughest stuff ...

So, after a very long wait, I'm absolutely delighted with Hatteras ... both the people and the boat.

    Exceeded expectations.

I would like to sincerely thank YachtForums. I deeply appreciate the advice given.

That is his cruising speed, 30.4 knots......Sounds like the boat has C18's, so it would be 75GPH both engines. A certain engine pretty much burns the same GPH at the same 80% load no matter what hull it is mounted in, provided it is propped to achieve the top rated rpm's for the motor.

    Hi Capt.J
Sorry but I think I did not understand...are you meaning that a 34 tons 54 Hatt c-18 equipped can run near 30 kn like cruising speed?

Yes 30kts was cruise on that day. WOT is 35kts.

As I said, she was lightly loaded and seas were flat. The hull really likes to run at 30+.

I expect normal cruise to be somewhere around 28-29 knots, but we'll find out when she's loaded up. Frankly in our seas, any cruise over 25kts is normally unlikely.

Engines are 1150HP Cat C18s. I'll post guage photos when I get a chance.

You speak the truth there white man. You can count the number of "flat ass calm" summer fishing days on 1 hand. Low 20's is the speed most "good" days.

    Hi Scrumpy,
It's good you and Liberty brought this up.
A few months ago a few experts here, and they are experts, had a go at me for saying that if I didn't go out for a fishing trip with a forecast of POSSIBLE 12' to 14' wave plus swell, then I would spend most my time at the dock, as if I was somehow incompetent for going out in a forecast with possible 12/14' wave & swell.

I think many of the Florida guys are used to the kind of seas we have in Moreton Bay and think they can judge what is irresponsible to leave dock in, when in fact we live and fish in a totally different type of sea condition. They should try offshore Tasmania or NZ!
That is not to say that there aren’t tough times occasionally in Florida, but each time I have been there for a sea trial I may as well have stayed in the canals.

Speed is not the big deal Downunder. Solid quality and seaworthiness is.

Two photos show the guages separately. They're awful shots from my iPhone. Sorry. I have no idea why the Furuno gauge photographed well, but the Cat one didnt ... something about trying to photograph something overhead while standing up in open seas ...

    2100 rpm / 78% load / 43 gph / 30.4 kts

    I found one photo which showed both guages in same shot at 2050rpm;

    72% load / 30.1 knots

    Thanks Liberty for datas.
I asked you about boat's performance because I thought that your Hatt was equipped with c-18 1000 Hp. ...I hoped it was so because I'd like to know the real performance of an 54 Hatt c-18 1000 Hp equipped.
I'd to know more about this configuration.

About 2 knots less at cruise/80% load

I was nervous just looking at those pics! She has a nice flat section on the stern... Do you know what deadrise it's running...? Cheers
