I'm considering purchasing a 1986 Princess 35 Sedan. She is in excellent condition and has twin Volvo TAMD40B 165 hp diesels. The boat weights approximately 6.3 tons. I'm worried these engines might be on the small size as subsequent build years used 200 and up horsepower engines.

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard. I can't speak to your question as this boat hails from the UK.
Hence my question. How did this boat find its way to Georgian Bay? I certainly can't imagine that your looking at importing it.

    Hello Brian
I met a fellow last year at frying pan who had the same boat. I asked him about the engine hp (same as what your looking at) and he told me it was more then enough since it was diesel with lots of torque. In fact I saw him again this summer with a newer 48 foot sea ray. His family has grown and he wanted. 3 staterooms. He now has his princess up for sale at his home in around Mississauga I think. He has his own diesel shop so I know has had kept his boat in great shape.
Anyway he had a lot of good things to say about the princess, he would have liked to keep her if it had more room.

Thanks for the reply Tim. I've heard a quote by one individual that the hp to weight ratio should be 50 hp/ton so I would be right on the border line. I wasn't sure if that ratio only related to gas engines and I hate the idea of having "just enough" power. I've seen a Princess 35 for sale in Port Credit Mississauga but it was a 200 hp version so it probably isn't the same boat.
    Thanks again.

My understanding from the broker is that the current owners are the second owners and have owned and operated it in Georgian Bay for 16 years. The original owners purchased it at a boat show. I've been told it's a fresh water boat that has never seen salt water.

The manufacturer must have brought the boat over for the Toronto boat show in an attempt to enter the market. Any idea how many they actually sold? I really find it interesting that a UK based builder would try to sell into our market when there was such a huge difference in the currency valuations at the time. I believe it almost $2.60 Cdn to the UK pound.

I had a Canadian client who also had a Princess, kept her in Dartmouth. Sounds like Princess had some success in the earlier years in the northern territories.

There are only a few here in the "Northern Territories" which makes me a little nervous. It's obviously well outside of warranty so I guess that's not an issue and there are plenty of Volvo Penta engines around so parts on those shouldn't be a big problem.

    Hi Brian,

Glad to see you have already joined the Princess Owners' Forum, a good place to start.

With reference to the older TAMD40 engines, some parts are now getting hard to get hold of, not impossible, just harder. Things like the turbo and injector parts can be serviced by any good specialist workshop. Some of the parts are now superseded by TAMD41 200hp parts and need modifications to fit them. Talk to a local mechanic who knows Volvos, remember they are now 25 years old.

Here is a good website to help you.

i'm really astounded that they could sell anything into Canada for a profit during this period. Particularily when you add in freight to the equation. I don't know what their "landed" selling price was but I suspect it wasn't justifiable long term or we would see more of them. Did they attempt to sell them into the US? By that I mean other than the Viking connection.(Brian excuse my questions I'm not trying to hijack your thread)
