What about Gordon Bennett's "Lysistrata" of 1901?
She was the world very first non-Royal Mega-Yacht of very modern design for her time.

    Monkey Business

    As Jacques Clouseau once said,
"Try to do something about your filthy minkey"
The Return of the Pink Panther - Hilarious - YouTube

"Monkey Business" was a yacht frequently docked in South Florida at the Turnberry Isle Resort Marina. She is an 83-foot Broward motor yacht custom built and previously owned by the developers of that luxury resort. Famous guests included Elton John, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson, Julio Iglesias, Jason Luetke and others.

Much more importantly, it was the yacht used by Gary Hart as his campaign headquarters during the 1988 Presidential Race. It was also the HQ for something else too of course: Madame Donna Rice.

In any case, despite rumors to the contrary, "Minkey Busi,…", I mean, "Monkey Business" continues to ply the waterways with the rich and famous onboard, albeit with a new color scheme and flying bridge. Monkey Business Private Yacht

Shown here in original and current condition, "Monkey Business" certainly continues impress and ply the waterways with the rich and famous aboard - if not in a new environs. (Europe vs. Florida).:p
Still, if you take out a charter be sure not to invite the press along as that rarely works out. ;)
    Cheers!

    Good Ship Lollipop

Crewed by none other than Ronald Reagan's Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (and Ghana).

    I've thrown away my toys
    Even my drum and train.
    I wanna make some noise
    With real live aeroplanes.

Some day I'm going to fly.
    I'll be a pilot too.
And when I do, how would you
    Like to be my crew...

    On the good ship lollipop.
Its a sweet trip to a candy shop
    Where bon-bons play
On the sunny beach of Peppermint Bay.

    Lemonade stands everywhere.
    Crackerjack bands fill the air.
    And there you are
Happy landing on a chocolate bar.

See the sugar bowl do the tootsie roll
With the big bad devils food cake.
If you eat too much ooh ooh
You'll awake with a tummy ache.

    On the good ship lollipop
Its a night trip into bed you hop
    And dream away
    On the good ship lollipop.

Later she owned a somewhat larger craft, the "Hiilani".
One mark for correct identification of owner.
    Cheers!

Should be worthy of 1/2 a point.

She was named after a drink; or was it the other way around?

    SS Delphine (extraordinary)

Has the SS DELPHINE been mentioned?

    Horace Dodge’s Steam Yacht DELPHINE

I'm sorry but you left out a few minor (incredible) details: (And yes, you get 1/2 a point).

For seven years the Brothers had been producing their own Dodge automobile, which was a great commercial success with cars to a value of $35,000,000 being sold in the first year!

Horace Dodge, the youngest of the Brothers and the ‘mechanic’ of the two, loved yachting. In 1904 he ordered a 40-foot launch and by 1910 he owned two other larger vessels, both named HORNET. As Horace had always liked to develop his own sources of power, he created the Dodge Marine Division in addition to the car business.

These launches had always one problem: insufficient sleeping accommodation. So in 1913 he ordered the 180-foot NOKOMIS I and four years later, its 243-foot long successor was built. His next yacht, the 258-foot DELPHINE, named after his only daughter, was built in 1920.

That year tragedy hit the family when both brothers died. The splendid yacht DELPHINE was finally launched on April 2, 1921. At that time she was the largest yacht in tonnage ever built in the USA. The facilities onboard were superb: besides the large owner’s stateroom with en-suite bathroom, there were also nine guest staterooms. The guests could enjoy the luxury of three lounges, a music room, a card room, and above the dining room there was a smoking room. To serve the 20 guests onboard, there was a crew of 55 who all had their accommodation in the bow. DELPHINE could reach a speed of 15 knots with her quadruple steam expansion engine designed by Horace Dodge. This powerplant gave approximately 150 revolutions a minute, while the required pressure of 250 p.s.i. was produced by three American Babcock and Wilcox boilers. Even today DELPHINE’s engine is unique, as most of the steam engines ever built were of the triple expansion type!

The Fife built ketch Eilean has probably been seen by more people than any other Classic Yacht. She was the boat in the video of the Duran Duran pop song 'Rio'.

The video was shot in Antigua in the '80s and was a smash hit around the world. So roll you suit sleeves up in a 'Crockett & Tubbs' style and be prepared for some big hair from the boys.

After the heady days of the '80s she fell into disrepair and sat at our yard for years. She was bought by the Italian watchmaker Panerai and brought back to life. This article has some good photos of her restoration in Italy.

Here is a video with good views of her topside restoration. Paneri Eilean British Classic week - Sailing from London to Cowes - YouTube

Looks like the boys on the bowsprit are having too much fun!!

Be sure to click on the show more button below the video window for some very interesting history of the yacht and her owner's involvement in yachting.

    Kalizma

Can't forget about Elizabeth Taylor's 165 foot Edwardian motor yacht, "Kalizma" named for Richard Burton's children, Kate, Liza and Maria...

She was built in 1906 by Ramage & Ferguson and originally launched as Minona, she has also carried the name Cortynia and Odysseia.

The yacht was restored and modernized a few years ago by her new owner and has a fancy website and everything... My Kalizma

I guess i am one of those semi-senior members  . My mother loved that BIG BAND era and it rubbed off on me.

I saw that vessel there at Francis Langford's Outrigger Inn on the waterway one year while I was taking my father and japanese stepmother on a cruise down the inland waterway from their home base near Daytona. We docked and had dinner there....fond memories.

    Just curious

    Has the Savarona been mentioned?

Savarona > About Savarona > The Story of a Ship

Hmmm,...., built for Mrs. Cadwalader - granddaughter of John Augustus Roebling, who after 19 yrs convinced the city of New York to build the Brooklyn Bridge, dies of tetanus & lockjaw 3 weeks before the groundbreaking (his right foot was crushed by a docking boat), and whose son, Washington, takes over the project only to fall ill with caisson disease (you try setting the foundations of a bridge deep underwater in 1872, i.e.,the "bends"") finished directing the project from a room with a view (yes, of the Bridge) with the help of his wife Emily (who learned engineering on the fly) in 1883 -- and certainly one of the most fabulous "mega" yachts ever constructed,..., is she really famous?
    Famous owner: no.
    Famous deeds: no.
Named for an African swan living in the Indian Ocean:yes.
Used for human trafficking and prostitution (twice): yes.

So the jury has reached its special verdict: No grounds for celebrity. :(
    Regrets,

Wow, she is a real stunner, what "yachting in style" is really all about and can be enjoyed for only 350,000 Euros a week for you and 37 of your closest friends!

    Confucious say,...

    ..., what is "Famous" Yacht?
    Language matters, to be sure:
"“If language is not correct, then what is said is not what is meant; if what is said is not what is meant, then what must be done remains undone; if this remains undone, morals and art will deteriorate; if justice goes astray, the people will stand about in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness in what is said. This matters above everything.”"

Confucious - philosopher, and political theorist, 551-479 BC

Really meant to define this thread as one featuring yachts which "earned" their celebrity, by virtue of deed or those of their famous owners - but wussed out with a weak "who came on board" definition, my regrets.

And since "Savarona (III)" was in fact, "owned" by Kemal Ataturk - only the man that revolutionized and saved modern day Turkey (gods bless his secular bones) -- she is clearly FAMOUS, again my bad.

In any case, its a fun thread, and I hope all continue to contribute & enjoy.
    Cheers!

Although she did not enjoy the refit her onetime owner bestowed upon Christina O, Galeb might be worthy of mention - something to do with Winston Churchill, perhaps. ;)

    Seagull a al

Yugoslav Navy (JRM) Yacht Galeb, also known as The Peace Ship Galeb (Brod Mira), was used by the late President of the Yugoslav Republic Marshal Josip Broz Tito on his numerous foreign trips and to entertain heads of state, as well as other persons of worldwide renown. The ship attained an iconic status among the peoples of Yugoslavia, as well as among the many diverse nations and members of the Non-Aligned Movement. "Galeb" is Serbo-Croatian for "seagull" (the Laridae family).

The yacht first came to international attention in 1953 when Tito sailed up the Thames to meet Winston Churchill on the first visit to Britain of a communist head of state. He was greeted on board by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Yugoslav yacht Galeb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tito particuarly loved the glamour the 384 ft yacht conferred on his regime. He used it for parties, foreign visits and diplomacy - entertaining such luminaries as Khrushchev, Gaddafi and Gandhi. Tito was particularly excited to welcome Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who played Tito in the 1973 war epic Sutjeska.

Unfortunately, she has not fared so well since John Paul Papanicolaou, the same Greek yachtsman who owns the yacht Christina O bought her around 1991-92. :(
