i spent a month there in a motor yacht last year ... plan to take my boat up again by the end of oct ... i go there quite often even without my boat ... sounds like you have some questions ??? shoot ...
Yea I was thinking about going there in a few months too. Which of the main 3 marinas on Phuket would be the best to stay at? I was thinking about Phuket Yacht Haven because of its proximity to Phang Nga Bay. Any other tips/recommendations when I am there?
some marinas like royal phuket marina & yacht lagoon are tidal marinas ... i.e. during low tide it's almost impossible to get in or out ... i like ao po marina ... it's on the N.E. tip and perfectly placed for cruising in phang nga bay ... this is where i berth for the season ... great bunch of guys and very professionally run ... more info here ... Welcome to Ao Po Grand Marina, Phuket, Thailand
Sailing Phuket Hello - I noticed your message and I hope you don't mind me jumping onto the thread - I'm based in Bangkok and have started to sail inthe last year. I have also crewed as a chef on board motor yachts and would like to know the best marina to go to for work during October? Can you recommend any one marina over another for short term crew work if it exists or alternatively, join in sailing/motor boat around Phuket. Many thanks, H
for this, i gotta recommend the royal phuket marina ... if there's a job to be had, it's here ... wish u all the best ...
We will be sailing in Phang-Nga Bay in 10 days time with a catamaran. I asked the marina to help us with provisioning. The list they sent us does not contain any canned food. We prefer the canned food for its practicality as we will be chartering only for 10 days. Can anyone give us an idea about availability of canned food in supermarkets near Phuket. Are there any restaurants which we can eat out on the costs of the bay? Do some vendors come to the boat to sell food? As we need to plan ahead I appreciate any help.
you can buy canned food at supermarkets in town. out in the bay, there are many islands with restaurants ... and local fare is generally of good quality & cheap. and no, i have never seen vendors come out to a boat. you're thinking of bangkok ... the last thing i would recommend is picking up a copy of the Southeast Asia Pilot ... it's very well written, extremely comprehensive in its coverage and will answer 99% or your questions. the book is published in phuket so it will easy to get a copy there. hope this helps.
sailing phuket thailand Thank you very much for your prompt response. It seems that we need to use the dinghy a lot since restaurants do not have their own jetty (this is common in some parts of Meditterrenean Sea we sailed before and vendors with boats ). Is it safe to leave the dighy on the shore? How can we secure it? As the chartering company does not insure the dinghy, we need to pay in for any damage or theft which may happen to the dinghy.
in all my years sailing in the andaman sea, i have personally never encountered any form of theft in thai waters ... i've always gone ashore, pulled it way above the waterline & used a rope to secure it ... that's it ...
