Most of the facilities for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are around the eastern part of False Creek - east of the Cambie Street bridge.

These first couple pictures show the Creek looking west towards the bridge, then looking east from the bridge deck.

In the first picture you can see one of the police boats that patrols this area around the clock, the Olympic Village is on the left (south shore) and BC Place stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held is the white dome that's partially visible on the right. The police have put barricades across the entrance to this part of False Creek, so it must be a big hassle for the boats in the small marina to get in and out.

Here's one of the police boats, and in the second picture you can see the big inflatable barricades underneath the Cambie bridge.

In that second picture, the sphere on the left is Science World which has been taken over by the Russian delegation to be their showcase for the 2014 winter games. In the background behind the boats is part of the Olympic Village where the athletes will stay.

The Abitibi is used for harbour cruises.
There's a nice Chris Craft there.
The last picture is Laser Princess, and behind that is Quantum Leap.

These pictures were all taken yesterday, a nice sunny afternoon. I have a ton of pictures of all the Olympic sites around downtown that I took and posted on a blog. I'm not sure it's appropriate for me to post the address of the blog (but I will if a moderator says it's ok), so if you're interested you can PM me.

First picture in post #3...if you look way beyond the sailboat mast in the foreground, you can just see the front of the flybridge and lower bridge windshield of my 70 ft Stephens..nice to see it still riding high ..lol....

Laser Princess was in Tacoma for a bit of a refit a few years ago, the windows where all removed and it froze really bad for a while, all the interior varnish crazed really badly, estimate to re do was over a million, I believe he settled for 500k and the work is still not started. Apart from that , she is quite a beauty. The CC is an older woody, used to be house kept but is now checking bad, a professor just bought a few months ago and sits in the cockpit stinking up the boat with cigars, has new Cummins 600 hrs or so, the Quantum leap is owned by the CC guy, sold to buy Quantum Leap, an 80's era Azimut, 60 ft thereabouts out of San Diego. In pic 3 to very left you can see the bow of a Dutch canal barge, was converted and then washed up on shore in Florida in Hurrican Andrew, was in Directors yard for fixing but went TU and Director ended up dumping it for cheap, a guy from Oklahoma bought it, restored it quite a bit, cut in 3 pieces, (135 ft long) and trucked it to Vancouver, re welded it back together, it's Iron not steel and leaks a lot, has an 8 cyl. mercedes diesel . (running on 7). not the safest boat at the dock.
There is also a new 59 ft Grand Banks there, California owner, nice boat and quick.

Thanks for the info. I was going to try to get a better picture of the canal boat, but couldn't get an unobstructed view.

Good stuff Ward, there is no shortage of nautical subjects in False Creek.
    Keep them coming.

Well, this one would certainly qualify as an "object"... I particularly like the ship's wheel, and the fact that the tender matches the parent ship.

Nothing much happening here on the 4th of July

Just a couple pics of a serene evening...

    1. A few boats in the eastern part of False Creek with the (still largely unsold) Olympic Village condos in the background

    2. I think the air draft of the Cambie Bridge is 50', so bigger sailboats stay outside.

    3. In case the name of the restaurant wasn't clear in the last picture, the upstairs is called "Monk's," downstairs there's an oyster bar called "McQueen's."

    Title change?

Maybe the title of this thread should should change to 'Old' Olympics Site.

I was expecting to see images of yachts arriving on the Thames for the London Olympics which start three weeks tomorrow!

Thank K1W1. I knew about the other one but opened this one thinking it was similar. Hence the suggestion we changed the title.

    Thanks for the change Carl!
