I wanted to ask a question of all you 6-71TIB owners. Any of you familiar with Capital Transmissions model 11-200? I am looking at purchasing a vessel with these and am quite concerned because parts are scarce as well as mechanics. I am looking into new transmissions, like ZF.

Any comments or thoughts are appreciated. What new transmissions would be best or has anyone every done this?

    Thanks
    Stuart

I talked with them earlier this morning and very knowledgable. But I am interested in those out in the water using these transmissions and their experiences, maintenance, etc. Thanks for your relpy...always appreciated.

Those are heavy duty gears and if A) In good condition and B) Properly maintained they should outlast the engines. I don't think there is a direct bolt in for them though. Changing to a ZF may require changing the mounting and/or the shaft. If one goes up you will be looking for a rebuild or an RTO to replace it.

i have those gears gears behind a pair of 671 TIBs.

Overall they are fine, if working properly, and not really worth changing or upgrading gears because of the labor and change of engine position involved in the swap.

About 2 years ago i rebuilt a Capitol Gear. It cost approx 10-15K i think to have someone do the complete job. If i remember parts were 5-8K or something like that, I will check the log next time im on boat. As usual the estimate was not quite that high, but it was still cheaper than pulling both gears and re-doing engine beds and possibly props and shafts.

If both gears were to go at the same time, then there would be cause to considre changing to new gears.

Parts are available and there is good customer support from a company in FLA and Canada, I think. Both are available through a google check and there is the shop book online also.

There is one advantage to switching gears from the Capitol; The Capitol requires a pretty extreme engine angle. New gears would level the engine and put the engines about 6 inches towards the stern. That could effect the boat handining, good or bad....

Bottom line, if the gears are not broke, have the right oil, cooling, good pressure, and shift into and out of gear without issues, I recommend leaving them alone....

    good luck....
