Lürssen launched hull and superstructure of the supposed to be largest yacht in the world! The launch became necessary after the dry dock is to small for adding the bow as it is only 170m long.
The size itself makes her special but the kind of water jet propulsion makes her VERY interesting and I soo curious to see her completed at the end of 2013 or early 2014!! How do you judge her design?

    Hi,

That is not an uncommon way to build big ships

In another Lurssen yard nearby they should be able to lift her if necessary to stick the bow on.

The power package on this is something untried by this yard before, I am of the understanding that all that part if the project was sourced out of house from another builder who had done a lot of R & D on it and the project never went ahead.

It was briefly shown on YF A few years ago if anyone wants to try and work out what it was.

I too was shocked to see the holes in the underwater hull of the transom suggesting waterjet propulsion... Nice it has a straight bow or does it? not sure now I look at the photos carefully. This has been quite a year for Lurssen!

Before watching the clip note the following:

1- Don't consume any kind of beverage while watching unless you crave a forced high pressure nasal wash!
2- Have plenty of floor space to roll on and laugh your guts out.

Thanks Carl, I needed the laugh!

    Cheers,

That was a very funny video! It's been a while since I have seen it. Great tie in.

Are you talking about that CODAG-WARP system that Blohm & Voss has been pushing?

Four waterjets on a 180 m yacht...
Not really my taste to say the least.

I think what you see are the holes for the exhausts, and the waterjets may actually be below (and even more monstruous), as can be seen here:
    Blohm + Voss Naval

I wonder where they will get all the air needed for those gas turbines... Grilles behind the canvas on the main deck?

So is B&V involved in 'Azzam' or did Lürssen and B&V develope it together as they are partners in building navy vessels?

Just wondering has anyone seen any renderings of the vessel, and I was under the impression that boats of this size require lifeboats, unless there hidden I guess...?

Also the longer version of the "front fell off"... a bit of ozzie humor... make sure you have incresed floor space for rolling :D

    180 meter?

A yacht building business website has Topaz at 180 meter and I think Azzam at 200 meter (656ft). This website had interviews with well known people that work in Germany's Mega yacht market.

I'm pretty sure Topaz comes in at 147m (around the 140s), I can't find much on Azzam. I heard she is currantly at 180m, with the extenion she will come in at 200m. I've also heard 220m when complete... it really depends on that bow section. My guess is, she'll be around 180m when complete. Cheers

She is currently ca. 170m and will be 180m long after her bow is added.
You are right and the article is wrong.

I'm sure you'll start to hear all kinds of rumoured LOA's for both yachts. How about we just wait until we know for sure!

    Project AZZAM..

The new Kingdom 5KR being built for Prince Al-Waleed of Saudi Arabia.

Also has been word on the street he paid the city of Canne all the money they needed to extend the quay there to accomodate the 180meter when completed.

    Hi,

I haven't heard that one yet. It certainly has a couple of unusual features if it is to be the new Kingdom 5KR.

Is he far enough up the totem pole to have a boat this big?
