We've got almost 4000 people online right now with 2400 of them looking at the Lazzara LSX Quad review I wrote a few years ago. The last I heard, Lazzara shut down operations. Has there been some recent news?

Any knowledgable replies would be appreciated, as I have a customer seriously considering their new 68.

I don't know on whether or not they've shut down. I do know that they've owed a lot of companies in the marine industry a lot of money for quite some time now.......

For what it's worth, their Facebook page was active as of last week and it looks like they've got the hull started on a new 64 foot model.

Back in Sept 2010, I fired a flare in the 'Yacht Shots' thread, but few saw the light... http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/110947-post31.html

I'll be northbound on 95 from 10AM to 12:00 tomorrow, on my way to Merritt Island for a media event at Bertram's new facility. Maybe we can catch up?

But right now, it's 10:30 PM; the end of another day of coding and uploading. This is what my eyes have looked like for about 12 weeks straight...

Warranty and support are important considerations when purchasing a new boat. He may want to wait for the new Cheoy Lee 75 Alpha; the flybridge version coming this summer.

I just don't like that she is not American made. Not at all.

Sorry for the typo, I meant the 64. The deckplans are very nice and projected performance a great plus. But, of course, all just theory.

Obviously, no intelligent person would knowingly buy a new yacht from a company that could not support it. Media in the last year reported a new infusion of cash into Lazzara to support their existence. That must be mistaken for truth. I heard that they were now building a 64 by order, and my owner was lurking to see the outcome.

    If negative, another sad story.

A friend of a friend ran that boat to the boat show. They went overboard electrically with that boat, and the crew had many issues resulting from it. The computer system controls the popup recessed cleats among other things. Well needless to say, they got to the boat show and the computer blinked, and they couldn't get the cleats up to tie the boat up......several other issues occured with things that shouldn't be controlled by a main computer.

That boat arrived in the states only a few days before FLIBS and the CL team never had a chance to squash the bugs. Everything has been addressed since then and I'm told the new flybridge boat is MUCH improved over the first unit, which was essentially a prototype.

And I agree... cleats shouldn't be electronically controlled. It's the one thing us humans shouldn't be able to mess up!

It's just too over-computerized. I don't mind seeing a Crestron system running all of the A/V stuff, but the boat stuff should be left to normal switches and breakers......not relying on a computer, when the computer goes down everything does.........there's no redundancy.........Searay had this problem with their 68's and I know several owners that wouldn't buy one because of the computer running everything.........

YF comes through again. Someone posts a question, then alternate suggestion comes up, then a close 2nd-hand report of problems, then a new report overriding the negatives reported. Plus the objectivity of practical input that hopefully builders pay attention to. Isn't this knowledge/opinion exchange what YF is about :D

I have also heard that the bugs affecting the CL Alpha were in part because she is hull # 1 and also because there were so many innovative and cutting edge ideas implemented and the Alpha FB is supposed to be the "new and improved." One thing that you never have to worry about Cheoy Lee is their financial ability to make right, support, or keep going. I'm a long-time Cheoy Lee believer and fan.

Cheoy lee builds a pretty well built boat overall. I don't like the quality of their stainless steel which is pretty much common throughout all of the Taiwan builds. I don't have any experience with the newer ones......but I did a little work on 2 older ones. EVERY dc wire throughout the boat was orange and only numbered at the very end. It made tracing wires a nightmare......

Computer controlled pop up cleats? You guys are kidding, right?

Don't get me started on Taiwan stainless! It takes a bottle of rust stain cleaner a month to stay ahead!

    CaptJ,

I can see it was late in the eve when you posted, so you may have been tired. Cheoy Lee is based in Hong Kong, NOT Taiwan. And unlike a few of their Taiwanese counterparts, CL is an ISO certified yard.

I haven't been aboard many of their older builds, but I've been on a number of new Cheoy Lee's over the past couple of years for sea trials and reviews. I didn't see the wiring issues you mentioned, but you can't have shoddy wiring when it's built to class.

We've all seen molded stainless parts on older Taiwanese builds. These components lacked sufficient chromium or there were impurities in the metal. I haven't seen this issue on Cheoy Lee's builds, so I ventured a call to CL's Ft. Laud office and asked John West if they had an older boat at the yard and if he could take a few cleat pics. These were taken with his camera phone so they are a little grainy. These are the cleats from a 2006 72' Cheoy Lee. I don't see a problem here...

I think he may have been referring to a slightly older Cheoy Lee than a 2006 model.

2006 is like a new model to some of us older guys. :D

Nope, the popup cleats are controlled by the computer........wonderful, huh?

Ohhhhh I know all about Taiwan stainless......

The Cheoy Lee's I referred to with all orange wires, (they were only numbered at the very end of each wire, wherever it went) were boats built in the late 80's, 90's. A 2006 is a new boat for the most part, comparitively speaking, and considering very few boats were built after say 2007 from each builder.......probably 20-30% with most builders compared to what they built in 2006......

In the pics, if you look at the cleat with the dockline on it, the sideways view, you can see the discoloration all along the side of the cleat where it meets the deck, and some of the flat section. Take that boat from here to Nassau, and within a day or two you'll be polishing those cleats again.

I understand that all stainless will rust, but Taiwanese stainless has to be polished on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as many will attest.........

It's also the same way if the stainless has been welded, because when stainless is welded it tarnishes the outside, which is then polished back, but also tarnishes a certain metal in the stainless throughout the metal. The stainless on the 160' delta was all welded and had to be polished every 2 weeks and would never come really nice.......
