Does anyone know how long it would take to bring a boat from the Baltimore area to the Great Lakes in Kenosha WI? The boat is a 55 Fleming.
Do you plan on making the trip up the East Coast, St Lawrence Seaway and then the various Great Lakes? Also, what time of year would you be doing this?
We plan 3 weeks from Ft. Laud. to Traverse City. 2 of which are through the canals. We take out time usually. From Baltimore, I'd plan 2 weeks for a leisurely pace. You could hustle and make it in a week once you get into Lake Erie and don't have any weather issues.
A straight delivery, you could do it in 2 weeks, maybe less........I did Bear, DE to Toledo, OH in 8 days.......in a 58' Searay SB
You may also want to look at going through the Erie Canal. Just looking at a map it shortens the distance by over 500 miles over the St Lawrence Seaway route. A 55 foot long boat should be able to go through all the locks but I would recommend some research just to make sure.
Yes, however there are a couple of lower bridges which limit passage to smaller boats. I think the air gap is 17' if I recall. I know you can find it easily online. The Fleming might make it if she takes antennas down. I'm pretty sure the radar arch is clean.
The eastern section of the Erie canal is not an issue for most boats (up to 20' I think). That will get you to the Oswego and into lake Ontario. The western section, to bypass lake Ontario, is lower and a problem for larger boats, 15' or so Check the canal website As to the overall time, it depends on how much fuel you re willing to burn...
Here is a website you can use as a reference: New York State Canals: Maps You can go to the FAQ section for a quick reference. I think they have a section on allowable heights. They also have canal maps that show speed limits, where the locks are etc.
Travell Time If you do the Erie Canal and Oswego Canal, then it is 120 miles to the Welland Canal to Lake Erie. The tolls for the Welland Canal are $ 200.00 and average transit of the 27 mile canal around 8 to 12 hours just depends how busy canal is,somtimes faster. The St. Lawrence Sea Way web page is Seaway System If you require more information on the canal or help to get through canal let me no. Rodger Note: You need three adults on board for a up bound transit.
It's 20'2 to Oswego. If you go due West on the Erie canal directly into Lake Erie it saves a lot of miles but I think is either 16' or 16'5. The fees are accurate from the other posters. Either way will save you A LOT of miles from going the St Lawrence Sea Way, and you should be able to get a 55' Fleming low enough to get it through the Erie one of the two ways.
Is shipping your yacht by truck under consideration? If so, you may want to investigate some of the companies available on this link. At least one site indicated they can ship yachts up to 70 feet in length. There are some MD based companies so I would try them first. BoatU.S. Links
