I don´t think this is the way they turned the ship. Why use a wider radius when heading towards an island than the previous turn on free water?

I think it was like in my drawing where he did a normal turn, but initiated it too late. Then when the new course was established, they realized that the rocks were ahead of them and made a sharp turn to the right.

Then as I said, on my map is an underwater rock that is missing on this map and if this is what they hit, the captain was right, even if he shouldn´t have been there at all...

So much for that rock being uncharted. The track subsequent to the grounding appears that they went quite a ways before they realized they had a problem and turned to beach it. That subsequent track was undoubtedly the time while it was reported to the passengers that there was a generator problem instead of ordering the passengers to prepare for abandoning ship. A bad mistake following bad navigation. Still the worst thing is that he abandoned his passengers.
On a side note, there was a similar case of a captain leaving his passengers to die about a year or so ago, I believe it was a ferry maybe in Turkey. Anybody know what the final outcome of that deal was?

Hard to say, but the turn shown here is conceivable. Who knows what systems they were losing. The maneuver, from initial strike to final position, seems to take about an hour. Lots of things could have happened in that time, winds, currents, mechanical failures. Perhaps the thrusters were all that was available to maneuver at that point. Speculation in either case.

I was referring to what caused the grounding, not what happened after...

The BBC Television News this evening played recordings between the Coastguard and the ship (thirty minutes before the evacuation began) with the ship insisting that they only had a power generator problem, despite the coastguard saying that crew and passengers had telephoned the police saying that they had a serious problem and that passengers had been ordered to put on lifejackets.

If the time of the recording is correct, this demonstrates the integrity of the ship’s construction and her ability to stay afloat despite the terrible injuries inflicted by the grounding thirty minutes to an hour before.

It looks like this may have caused the grounding. The captain was otherwise occupied:

Reference to Post #85 by AMG,

In regard to your link in post #85; photo #1 and the photo of the ship near the end of the link, showing the the Concordia in relationship to the small harbor entrance...

I am 100% against what the captain of Concordia did in the demise of “his” passengers, crew and ship.

But with a little luck and the grace of God and the Concordia rounding that point a little further out on a sharper starboard turn.... the ship could have stuck herself in the harbor entrance and remained upright. Certainly vast damage to the ship but many lives saved.

OH.... If we could only roll back time for a short while.

But... time is time and facts are facts.

Lol! Half a billion dollar ship I'm responsible for perilously close to land, 4,000+ people in my care, but boy oh boy she's cute. What's the worst that could happen?

    Am I missing something here?

With whom was the captain otherwise occupied?

By this time, there will have been a lot of water in her lower hull and so she may not have had the propulsion to travel any further.

Kinda like the BC Ferry that ran into a rock and then went down a few years ago near Hartley Bay - with the bridge man and woman "watch" otherwise engaged. Now that was a great rescue story - many small craft from the local Indian reserve successfully evacuated about 300 from the ferry before it sank.

You can certainly delete it if you want to but it WAS the right girl. Just not the photo used most often in the tabloids.
