MAN Diesel longevity and overhaul cost???

    Can anyone here give me an idea of what it would cost to overhaul a pair of 10 cyl, D2840LXE, 840 hp MAN diesels?? I am looking at buying a boat with a pair with 2500 hours on them. It is a 58' cockpit motor yacht. How many hours is typical between overhauls?

    I've got a pair of the older 820's. Great engines. We had a pair at our marina that had 3,000 hours and were still going strong last I heard. Depends on how you run them. 1750-1850 rpm I would expect a minimum of 5,000 hours. Dock chatter suggests $5 - 6k per cylinder for a rebuild. I rebuilt one side 9 years ago at the cost of $27k.( 5 cylinders plus turb, etc) Price is dependent on what your rebuild includes. So make sure you know what your mechanic's quote includes if you are getting rebuilt

    Does anyone know which Man series had the serious exploding issue, they were nicknamed "mangranades" ?

    The 1050's mainly and some of the 820's......but once they've been overhauled updated, it sounds like they're lasting.

    Man's should go 5,000-6,000 hours in a sportfish application.

    a 1050 rebuild is around $40k an engine last I heard to do it right......

    I figured 5000 hours. This boat is more of a fast trawler application, probably run less hard then a sportfish. Also, the cylinder updates were done a while ago. I assume the MANgrenade would have gone off by now if it was present. Any ideas on fuel burn??

    60gph for both at 1950rpms.......1000rpms probably around 10gph, 800rpms around 6-8gph for both engines for the 1050hp engines.

    Co$t or where is a good shop??

    There is not a MAN guy/shop worth a stink around our area. I can only hope there is someone near Savannah GA. I think your next question should be were to find a good rebuild shop. You may have to go north or south a good ways.
    It sounds like your over the hump and you have a good set. Rebuild may not need to be soon and if your going to keep the boat, Planning is smart.

    Good point. I plan to move the boat around between N. and S. FL so I would locate the best MAN mechanic and go to him. The boat is in Ft. Lauderdale and if I proceed I will need a good MAN engine surveyor...any recommendations?

    Pete Angel, he's a man authorized repair shop.....They were very thorough on the last set of MAN's I saw them survey as well as a set or MTU's recently...The name of his company however, I cannot think of at the moment, maybe someone else can chime in with it.

    I had a pair MAN 1550s surveyed a couple months back by ACE Marine Diesel out of Vero Beach and I was pleased with their work 772-564-7070

    Thanks..Care to share what they charged? Did they bore scope and do fluid analysis?

    Hibanx: They charged me $1277.30 which included an oil analysis as well as a rather detailed physical inspection and sea trial. On the sea trial they attached a PC to the engines and collected an enormous amount of data at 900-2300 rpms in 100 rpm increments. Based on the data collected they did not recommend any further tests. They then compiled a report based on all the data collected. I was very satisfied with their work as well as the engines.

    I also had a vessel survey done by Marc Slackoff and Asc (Viking experts). that ran about the same amount. It covered everything on the boat from fire extinguishers to every light bulb!

    All this was done in my purchase of a 2008 54C Viking. The two surveys gave me the confidence to pull the trigger and in my opinion were well worth the money.

    FYI the boat I purchased had 650 hrs but is still under a MAN esp till this summer so I have chosen to go ahead and do the 1000 hr service on the engines before the warranty expires in the event something is discovered. The total cost for this service was $22,000 for both engines.

    I do light work on MAN stuff here in Jax. Performance Diesel has been a great resource and supported me very well helping me service my customers here in Jax. They offer a crew that will come to you, work on nothing else until the job is done. This offers a great time savings and still an under budget quote.

    Wow, I just got a quote from Marine Diesel Specialists, they want $5500 for the survey. I think I will shop it around!

    First make sure you have competent mechanics and similar scopes of work, then evaluate their quotes??

    That sounds high. I too would shop around........really what are you looking at, 8hrs at their hourly rate or so, plus oil samples.......

    The $5500 survey quote includes, external visual inspection, oil samples engines and transmissions, bore scope inspection of cylinders, injector test and sea trial.
    Estimated 3 days to complete. Still sounds like a lot to me.

    I just got another estimate for a survey that includes the same items for $2800. That sounds a little more reasonable. I realize that parts and service are expensive for MAN's, however, I feel that cost is offset by the reliability and longevity of the engines. Detroits can be maintained and rebuilt relatively inexpensively, but they only last half as long. In addition there is the added down time. It would be interesting to compare actual numbers comparing long term ownership cost difference between old 2-stroke detroits and equivalent hp MAN's or MTU's.
