My passion for yachting comes with some history. As a kid my grandfather worked in a boat yard in Oshawa Ontario. I still remember playing in them and imagining being on the high seas. Well I finally came across this photo in the cedar chest. It was built by Chrisandra yacht manufacturers. On the back it states "Summer 1975, George's boat, Gordon (my grandfather) installed air conditioning, dishwasher etc.. I have NO idea where she may be now,, perhaps an aluminum engine block on a lawnmower somewhere?? Brings back a lot of memories. Hope you like it.
Its certainly an old photo and in the same breath shows the difference in terms of stylig of a yacht that size back then as compared to a yacht of similar size today. Thanks for posting the pic and it is nice that it brought back some good memories to you!
Steve, This is really a GREAT thread. I've got a lot of old pictures (need to be scanned) and stories that I'd like to share. I'm behind the eight-ball, but I'll get something together and post it a little later. I hope our members will join in on this too. Good thread!
I thought this would get some talk. Just think in comparison to today yachts. Something of this size then, was massive. Who ever owned it had some $$. I wish my grandfather was still around so I could find out more. I can tell you,, I still remember the day it was launched,, half the city was at the Oshawa harbour. It was a cold grey day and it took forever to get the slings right so the crane could lift it. I'm just thinking,,, maybe the city might have something on record in the archives,, I'm sure that would take a lot of hunting,,,,
Hope this helps. http://www.tc.gc.ca/ShipRegistry/detail.asp?lang=e&ShipID=369343&category=all Official Number 0369343 Year Built 1975 Ship Name DALHOUSIE PRINCESS Year Rebuilt - Former Name M.V. WOW is all I can say,, being a Canadian,,, I was unaware of this registy,,, I'm so impressed,, THANK YOU,,, now if I could only find out where she is,,
Just go visit or phone the people operating DALHOUSIE PRINCESS. Odds are that there is someone involved who either knows someone from the original yard or knows someone that knows someone.... There are all kinds of people along the St Lawrence that have been involved in shipping so someone knows what happened to that vessel.Take a trip to Kingston and visit the locks going up to the Rideau Canal. They have all the old logs there somewhere and it's a fair bet that the vessel went through those locks, someone might even remember her from the photo that you have.
Hey Codger, That was quite an interesting web site to search all of the Canadian registered vessels. Have you been able to find any sites like that for Cayman registered vessels? Or maybe even US vessels? I was just now trying to find the CYI vessels but could not find a search engine like the one on the site you had posted.
Well I did some googling finally,,, the boat mentioned in the registry is this one,,, I also remember this boat,, it was built as a tour boat for the Thousand Islands in Perry Sound, Ontario. We went on the tour shortly after she was put into service. The original boat was named Chrisandra according to the vessel registration site but the registration has been suspended. So I'm not sure what that means,, could be she's been dismantled and scraped.. .
C4ENG The Canadian one is online, the Liberian one is not. Those are the only two that I've had dealings with. I would suspect that the US one is online and that the Cayman Islands one is not. PSDO If the original vessel was named Chrisandra, same as the name of the yard that built her then the original yard owners should be fairly easy to track down.
Well, I came across this discussion a year too late but you may be interested to know that this boat, or a sistership, is located in Kemah, TX, between Houston and Galveston. The USCG document shows that it was manufactured in 1975 and the photos from the last time I had it listed appear to match... I can't help but point out that the owner has recently decided to put the boat up on the market. I am putting a description and portfolio together now and will have it available in a week or two. I will add some links later if anyone is interested. To be blatanly commercial, I would be please to assist anyone in acquiring this yacht. It needs work but the boat seems worth the effort. Mike
I WAS THE ORIGINAL BUILDER AND OWNER OF CHRISANDRA AS WELL AS OWNER OF OSHAWA MARINA WHERE GORDON WORKED. ON THE ENCLOSED PHOTO I AM THE CAPITAN AT THE WHEEL BRINGING MY YACHT CHRISANDRA TO TORONTO HARBOUR FOR THE BOAT SHOW. I REMEMBER GORDON WERY WELL ,HE WAS ONE OF MY BEST MAN HELPING TO BUILD THE YACHT TRAVELING DAILY FROM PETERBOROUGH TO OSHAWA.
HI MIKE I AM THE ORIGINAL BUILDER AND OWNER OF THIS YACHT I AM INERESTED TO FIND OUT THE PRICE THE PRESENT OWNER IS ASKING.GEORGE
Greetings, Old post, but a bit of information on the Rideau Canal system. If Chrisandra did draw 2.47m (8' 1.25") she did not traverse the canal system. Navigation is limited to 5' (or they TRY to maintain 5'). I think limiting factor is NOT so much the channel depth but the sill depth on some of the lock stations.
Nice looking yacht. Like Carl, I am a sucker for all the vintage stuff. This one was designed by... who? I can imagine a scene in some ancient Great Lakes yacht club bar wherein Jack Hargrave and Art DeFever are toasting this guy for his skills. Thanks very much for sharing, psdo, Codger, et al..
wow I am amazed,, after all these years,,, can't wait to tell my father when he comes over for dinner tonight,
Hi everyone!, I’m the owner of this fine vessel Chrisandra! I’ve been living aboard her for about 4 years. Her current name is Doctors Note with a script pad underneath that has Excuused written across it. I’m slowly trying to restore and upgrade her! Local repair shops (pirates) make it more difficult! Fresh bottom done August 2016, took her out for about 2 hours. Loved it! I have tons of pics, and would like any and all info ya’ll can send me! Stories included! I would love to have her full story!
