This looks like a really proper modern day motorsailer. I think we will see more of this type yacht in our future fuel constrained world. I've long advocated for the motorsailer concept.

I was wondering why when I hit the new posts button I saw that Brian commented on the "Hortense" review and I was wondering how in the world could he have gotten that done. Obviously the mistake Carl highlighted.

Typical of European design and Euro-use is, IMO, the very small crews' quarters. Is it just me with this observation and opinion? "Hortense" is a lot of boat to take care of whether or not there are 8 guests aboard. Okay, two well motivated and skilled crew could porbably perform most functions but why cramp them in a space no larger than a jail cell? I thought there was a scarcity of good crew and a necessity to provide some liveability to attract and keep them.
    Just a thought. Cheers, Richard.

I really like Motorsailers, just look at those Phil Rhodes & John Alden beauties on the other thread (I bought my Dad the Rhodes' designs coffee-table book for Christmas a couple of years ago).

This design though does not hit all the right buttons for me. Very slab-sided, with nasty windows at waterline (I know its trendy but I don't like them). It does not look like she would enjoy a broadreach on a summer afternoon.

Good Motorsailers should be able to sail as well as just motor on when the wind drops. This new one just looks like a motorboat with some sticks propped up onto it.

    Not my cup of tea.

When a boat is elegant, you like it.
    If ugly, you don't.
    Quite normal.
And this applies to M/Y and S/Y as well, whatever your preference is.

Hortense has just come back form Rio according to Marinetraffic and is now back in Lorient.
I'be been wondering about the minimum crew it takes to sail this yacht. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Modern vs Past Designs

Notice I did say 'modern day' one. Certainly not the beautiful lines of some of those in the past ;)

I particularly like the lines of this Alden design
