Hey all...in the naming of a yacht are there any set rules (other than perhaps historical prerogative or superstition) to choose a female name? We have Alfa Nero (rather masculine), Ulysses, Skat, "A", Ice, Pelorus, etc...but it seems like many more are feminine....I know boats are usually referred to as "she" so would one be tempting fate to choose a masculine name?? Just a random question on a beautiful (NO humidity) Sunday afternoon.. Cheers,
Hey there, Until you get some posts running here look at this: http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/popular-yacht-topics/2466-yacht-names.html There also was a thread talking about the same aspect but from design point of view, yacht designs... masculine or feminine. Cheers, Alf
So...looking at that thread I guess that to some it does not matter whether the name is either mas. or fem. Some of the "names" do not seem to be names at all in the "proper" sense so I guess that anything is a go if one decided to name it what they want. Cheers,
Some people like to give a character to the boat through the name, others use names that relate to their work, belief, desire, hobby and so on. I guess it is one of the things that "man" uses to reach self satisfaction or initiate a statement! The other thread I mentioned is: http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/general-yachting-discussion/18831-masculine-vs-feminine-yacht-design.html?highlight=masculine+feminine Enjoy!
Oh yes Alfred I am well aware of that highly amusing and bizarre thread...what some people name their boats is simply hilarious....what you say is highly relevant as some may take a more serious approach to naming their yacht (like Lady Lola, named after the owner's wife) to some of the, ahhh, more profane names we see in the other thread...who may not be so reverent... I guess that the gist of my post was that if one was to name their $$$$$$$ yacht something irreverent that they might be somehow tempting fate....then again, I do not consider myself to be superstitious at all.... I do see more feminine names as well as, for lack of a better word, more noun/adjective type names than truly masculine ones.... Cheers,
