Were you in the marina yesterday afternoon (Sunday)? After our side was slammed with 63.4 knot winds & torrential rain during a 20 minute squall. I watched on XM Doppler weather as it crossed the sound & head your way. It was very localized & 3 or so miles inland got "a brief shower". At our marina, sails were ripped from masts, bimini tops launched & strataglass enclosures were ripped to shreads. Though I didn't see anything like a tornado, this was the first storm that I truly heard what seemed like a freight train screaming by. It was very scary to listen to all the "mayday" calls on the vhf. The weather guessers were right on the money (yeah right) & issued the first warning about five minutes after the worst was over.
Dave, I was anchored off Shelter Island in a 35 footer with I/O's watching it approach. The boss left his cell on the boat. Luckily (almost) he too saw it coming, got back to the boat and we booked out. As we came down the small canal where he docks the light rains came. I sped up as much as I could (canal is lined with small boats). At the very moment I turned the bow out from his slip to back in there was a big flash and we got slammed by a 60 Kt. wind on the beam and torrential downpour. Instantanious! I said this is going to be ugly, pressed the throttles and showed him why he pays me. Man that got the adrenaline pumping. Things like that are great for job security. LOL. It was forecast though in the AM, plus you should always expect it when we get these temp surges. Just keep one eye on the western sky.
I should have mentioned in the original post that the yachts you're seeing are: (1) Life's Finest II, (2) Carpe Diem, (3) My Iris, (4) Life's Finest II and (5) Double G
Believe me, I know this pattern too well on the Western L.I. Sound! I forgot to mention that I headed in at 3p.m. and we enjoyed the rest of the day with my wife & kids poolside at Riverside Yacht Club. I walked back down to the boat when I saw it coming.
Yeah, we had a couple of warm days, but it's actually been a little cooler than normal. We usually get a few high 90 days in June, but none so far.
Today in Sag we have: Intuition II, Continental Drifter III, Aquisition, and over in Greenport the Mystic Whaler
I just can't help but be in love (lust?) with Owl's Nest... something about her lines/sheer, her paint, her rigging and tower and transom... just perfect.
A few recent additions to the Waters about Sag Harbor: Adriana, Sea Gull, Scout, Indiscretion & My Shanti.
