I'm looking to replace the rubrail on a 1976 42. It is currently teak and stainless and looks to be original as far as I can tell. Can anyone who has done this provide any insight into this process?

How difficult was it to remove the teak rubrail?
What was the condition of the fiberglass and hull/cap joint underneath - did you have to do any significant work or were you able to just clean it up and put a new rubrail on?
And finally - what rubrails have you guys used with success as replacements on the 42?

I saw in this old thread http://www.yachtforums.com/threads/42-post-rub-rails-help.21257/ that a model R190 from Barbour was used with apparently good results. Any other suggestions?

Thanks. (almost) new Post owner here and looking forward to posting regularly once I start working on her in the next few weeks.

Update: she's mine, will be running her back from Chesapeake City to Long Island next week. I hope you're all ready for a ton of questions! 1976 42 hull #50. With gassers from factory - they do exist!

your engine room space must be pretty large with big block gas engines

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. Yes, the engine room space is huge, its almost in ridiculous territory honestly. We had the salon floor all the way out during the survey and everyone was just kind of staring and laughing in disbelief.

Bob - rail looks sharp - I will consider it. Was thinking of white pvc/stainless insert but will weigh what you've done as well. Are you sure the other gasser you know of isn't the same boat? Then we'd be back down to one. :)

Looks like I'll have some bigger swells on Tuesday for the run up to Atlantic City (thanks, Gaston), but looks to be long periods and not very windy so hoping its no big deal.

I used the R-190 from Barbour and it came out great. Check out my build thread, I have a close up of the profile in one of the pics.

Here's a shot of her halfway back to Long Island, at Farley marina in Atlantic City.

Thought so. The previous owner kept it there for many years. Was that the also the Post that Sassafras Harbor had listed?

Have a friend with 77 with gas. He re powered with big blocks and custom cams. Got the boat to fly and burns less than my 671Ti. Big weight difference gas vs diesel. Good luck with boat.

Wow I may need to chat with your friend :). This old girl ran great but "fly" she does not (nor did I expect her to).

Gas burn wasn't too bad, wasn't great - averaged about .5 mpg at 15/16kts by my crude estimates.

    Yes, it was Sassafras' listing.

No body believes it until they see it. He cruises at 22-23 knots. We have run together at 24 kts and he is on my but. He runs it at 3500rpm turns up 4500.
