Hi all, I am on the hunt for my next boat and on the shortlist is the 80's vintage Presidnet 41 as well as the 44 Ponderosa. If anybody has any experience with these boats, known issues, handling in a seaway etc. Any opinions appreciated. I know these are old boats and the associated age issues etc... more wondering about the build quality and general design Thanks very much Gary ps also going next week to see a Hatteras 40 DC...
There were over 100 President 41s delivered to the US. Although sometimes classified as "trawlers" they have modified V hulls. The Presidents in general are considered some of the "better" of the Taiwanese builds although many of the "Taiwanese Tub" issues are applicable to them in addition to the age factor. Ponderosa has many "sisterships" built under different names. In general, standard Taiwanesisms are more certain. Taiwanese issues to look out for include wiring, pumps, window leaks, decks, fittings, and blisters. However, put enough money into making one right and they can be roomy and comfortable for live-aboard and coastal cruising. The Hatteras 40 DC also has a modified V hull. A no brainer for build comparisons. Judy
