  1. LIGHTWEIGHT DIESEL ENGINE TAKES AIM AT U.S. MARKET

Many years of marine propulsion research and development have yielded one of the lightest, most efficient diesel engines on the market. STEYR MOTORS, now establishing its distributors in the US, offers its best alternative to 8-cylinder gasoline engines-the 250-hp MO256H45.

Extended combustion research work and fine tuning has resulted in an extremely compact, "design-for-the-future" diesel engine. This rugged, 4-stroke, turbocharged and intercooled powerplant is based on the time-proven model 236. It features innovative breathing and charging systems, as well as reinforced piston and injection systems.

It is intended as a fully competitive diesel alternative, and particular attention is paid to the dynamics of acceleration. The 256 Monoblock is enhanced with Holset turbocharger technology and STEYR's powerful, 2-stage Unit Injector system to become a very competitive replacement for V-8 gasoline engines. Like all other STEYR diesels, the 256 is manufactured from high-alloy materials to achieve light weight.

The dual-circuit cooling system is highly corrosion-resistant for long life.
STEYR has designed the engine for adaptation to a variety of marine transmissions, including direct, horizontal, 8° down-angle and 12º V-drive. An intermediate housing allows propeller shaft and jet-drive applications, and kits are available for installation with Mercury Bravo I, Bravo II and Bravo III sterndrives and duoprop drives.

The 256 boasts a 90-amp alternator, an instrument panel for monitoring engine systems and the optional Steyr Sportline-an integrated display unit containing digital instruments, switchboard, fuel management and driving range, speed-over-ground and a digital diagnostic system.

Options also include an additional key switch for governed speed, cable for secondary helm, front power takeoff, hot water system and fuel pre-filter with water separator.

  2. This engine is pretty interesting and during the Stockholm Boatshow last week we sold one of our 25-footers which should have it together with a Bravo Three drive.
The top speed is expected to be 46 knots with an economical cruising speed of 38 knots, which are the same figures as with the 270 hp 5.0 l petrol V8.
I´ll be back with test results later in the spring when the ice is gone... :)
