  1. Hatteras Introduces New 72 Motor Yacht
New Design Features Traditional Lines, Resin-Infused Hul

NEW BERN, N.C., Sept. 20, 2006 – The new 72 Motor Yacht from Hatteras Yachts features traditional exterior lines with subtle contemporary styling cues for an overall effect that fits into today’s marketplace while easily standing the test of time. This unique model features a wider salon than comparable motor yachts on the market, yet it still retains side-deck access that makes the 72 Motor Yacht perfect for the owner/operator.

    CONSTRUCTION:

Built in Hatteras’ main facility in New Bern, N.C., the 72 Motor Yacht features a resin-infused hull, rather than one built up of layers of hand-laid fiberglass. The automated resin-infusion process produces a more uniform hull thickness from one hull to the next, as well as the most ideal glass-to-resin ratio. This one-two punch produces a boat that weighs significantly less because of the lowered resin content, while providing a more precise fit of bulkheads, stringers and other components for increased strength and durability.

The solid-fiberglass hull bottom includes beefy support for key areas such as the tunnels, shaft log and strut locations. Divinycell coring is infused into the hull sides, decks and superstructure to add stiffness and reduce weight. Wherever possible in the vessel’s interior, lightweight components and materials are used to increase performance without sacrificing the structural integrity and soft ride that have been the hallmarks of Hatteras Yachts for more than 45 years. Because of this continued dedication to quality, the Hatteras 72 Motor Yacht will retain the five-year hull warranty that protects all Hatteras Yachts.

Thanks to the boat’s lightweight and efficient hull design, the 72 Motor Yacht is projected to achieve a top speed of 23 to 25 knots with her standard engines – a pair of CAT C32s rated at 1,550 hp. She will cruise at 20 to 22 knots at 2,000 rpm for a range of 375 nautical miles. With her top-rated 1,800-hp CAT C32 ACERTs, the 72 Motor Yacht will achieve cruise speeds of up to 24 knots and a top end approaching 27 knots.

    SHIP’S SYSTEMS:

The 72 Motor Yacht features a variable-deadrise hull form that flows from a convex bow shape to relatively flat sections at the transom. As proven on Hatteras models since 2002, this new hull shape combines a soft entry forward with the speed-enhancing characteristics of a flat-bottomed speed boat. Double chines that extend down the length of the hull work in conjunction with an exaggerated bow flare to knock spray down and away for a dry ride, while running strakes provide increased stability and improved tracking. Large, seven-blade propellers are tucked into deep prop tunnels for maximum efficiency, minimized vibration and reduced draft.

The Hatteras 72 Motor Yacht boasts several technological advancements that have proven themselves on recent Hatteras models. A forced air-induction system draws cooling air for the engine room from the inboard face of the bulwarks, greatly reducing the risk of saltwater intrusion in the engine room. Tunnel trim tabs increase trim control, while cylindrical shaft keys and cross-cut bearings extend the life of the running gear.

Like all Hatteras yachts, the 72 Motor Yacht contains an array of construction, mechanical, electrical and component enhancements that together make up the Hatteras Advantage. The industry’s only painted exterior finish, fuel tanks approved by Underwriters Laboratories, robust running gear and overbuilt mechanical systems are just a few of the hundreds of extra touches that make Hatteras a premiere brand.
