MTU Raw water pumps

    I need to replace raw water pumps on 12v2000. Is the only option, to go new from MTU or does someone know of a rebuilder. I checked with MTU and no parts are availible other then a complete new unit.

    Your pumps are probably made by someone other than MTU. Possibly Jabsco, sherwood or the other popular brand whose name escapes me. Check depco pumps site.

    Tried Depco pump. No luck. Shame you can't easily get a service kit for them.

    Somebody made the pump. Can not understand a non serviceable (or proprietary) water pump.
    Are there any marks or numbers casted or stamped anywhere?

    I can't either. Only casting numbers that go nowhere when I tried searching. The only number is Detroit/Mtu tag that is affixed to to it. And no indication of who makes it for them. Probably made in Germany is my guess.

    Pass on those numbers and some pictures. Also model/serial of the engine.
    I may have another source path.

    How bad shape they in? Leaking? Stiff bearing? Cam and end plates worn?
    Hours?

    I will probably learn a lil about these pumps myself.

    The part number from Mtu is 23526087. Detroit/Mtu parts department says they only available as a complete unit at a cost of $5500. I have one that just started leaking raw water and the other one has been leaking oil slightly. Its crazy that these pump are considered disposable.

    Interesting specs;
    How much were you leaking?

    Raw water pump – Relief bore
    check
    1. Check relief bore for oil and coolant discharge.
    2. Stop engine (→ Page 50) and disable engine
    start.
    3. Clean the relief bore with a wire if it is dirty.
    • Permissible coolant discharge: up to 10
    drops per hour;
    • Permissible oil discharge: up to 5 drops
    per hour.
    4. If discharge exceeds the specified limits,
    contact Service.

    Donzi 54 - Are you doing the work to change them yourself or do you have a mechanic you trust to do it for you?

    Some 3rd Party made those pumps, they no doubt have a service agreement with MTU as does CAT and Jabsco to not supply parts of pumps to anyone else.

    If you can either tale it apart yourself or have some you trust to do it ( without destroying it more doing so) talk the one that leaks the worst apart first and see what the actual problem is. Worst case scenario is you will need a new one anyway. How many hours have your engines done and do you have any noticeable vibrations when running at cruise?

    There are many manufacturers of mechanical seals out there who can build you one to match what you have the tricky bit comes with the Oil seals. CAT use two of them that have/had the number 1H5959 in their lube oil priming pumps.

    These have an odd outer dimension and are/were manufactured for CAT by Chicago Rawhide. There was not an alternate oil seal available anywhere when have looked. The same goes for the oil seal in the raw water pumps used on the 3306 Gensets.

    K1W1 - I will replace it and/or rebuild them myself. Was hoping that someone has been down this road with the Mtu 2000 series pump before and had found a source for the parts. I know what I expect to found inside them. But locating the correct seals can be the most difficult part if not impossible. I have also seen seals and bearings made that don't cross reference over and are proprietary to a manufacturer.

    I contacted Gilkes pumps and they said they didn't make that model for Mtu. My guess is maybe Steimel pump in Germany did.

    That was quoted from the MTU book.
    If you are not leaking that bad yet, You may not have a problem as per the factory spec.
    I'm still learning.

    I missed my contact and I'll find him next week. He is Volvo heavy and I remember him commenting on MTU parts before.

    Thanks rcrapps, any info is appreciated. The spec given may not be a issue if it was for machinery land based and leaking. I'm leaking much less then that and it is not going to get better or go away. 1700hrs I don't fault the seals for starting to leak, they've done there duty.

    K1W1 thank you very much. Looks like that is what I am looking for. I will contact them and verify if indeed it fits my pump.

    As crazy as it sounds, those notes are the same in a few MARINE manuals I found talking about that raw pump..
    Checkout your user guide. I thought it was a hoot when I first found it.

    My ole 2-stroke Detroits don't leak that much overall.

    Looks like K1W1 and his support may have found the data you really need.
