    Total engine weight: 2300 tons
    (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)

    Length: 89 feet
    Height: 44 feet
    Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm
    Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

    This isn't an engine for a ship. It's really the power plant for a robot to stop Godzilla before he attacks Tokyo again.

    Why else would you need 5 million ft/lbs of torque!

    That thing is insane. I love the ladders integrated into the block to climb down into the crankcase. What kind of warranty does it come with?

    fuel economy??

    With petrol prices on the rise I must ask... how many gallons to the mile? I can't imagine the injectors on that beast...

    Fuel economy

    A VLCC (very large crude carrier) that I worked on in the distant past burnt 150 tonnes of fuel per day at an operating speed of 14 kts (around 135 US Gal/ mile very roughly). We had a fuel capacity of 10,000 tonnes I think! She was around 300,000 dwt and a draft of 72'.

    I sure enjoy driving yachts!! :D :D

    around 15 years ago (from 1986 to 1990) i worked as a sailor on containerships at Hapag Lloyd.

    on "Frankfurt Express" (297m) we burned at 24knots around 200tons of fuel every day. but it was a twin screw vessel with 2 smaller engines, each with 9 cylinder and 35.000 HP

    on "Hamburg Express" (297m) we have had a steam-turbine which also had burned around 180 tons of fuel every day at around 24knots on a single propeller.
    but this ship was first build in the 1970's as a 2 screw (and 2 turbine) and has burned with this configuration around 400 tons a day with 29knots every day.
    they changed this 2 turbine configuration in the beginning of the 1980's ... because the fuel was getting more expensive.
    but it was great on that ship, because we had no vibration in the ship.... and on deck no sound.... it was like sailing with 24knots :D
    on the other side, the bad thing was going through the red sea... the temperature in the engine room was at around 65° Celsius ... :eek: , not a nice place to work on.
