How deep is one atmosphere in relationship to depth? I see this posted on submarine websites and it is also on the back of my new watch, which says "water resistant to 5 atmospheres" So how deep is that?
Click HERE for the explanations, but it's basically 10 meters per atmosphere... so 5 would be 50 meters, or just over 160 feet.
I think that what your watch is trying to tell you is that it will accompany you to at least 5 bars, after which it may abscond with the first person who buys it a beer: when was the last time you bought yer watch a beer then...?! (Sorry for that shallow post BTW... )
Don't forget pressure at sea level Just a quick point. Kevin is right about 10mtrs per atmosphere but you have to remember that at sea level you are already at 1 atmosphere, so 5 is only 40 mtrs deep. And 1 atmosphere is 1 bar or approx 14.8 psi

Some bars have the right atmosphere, and some don't. But so long as the Scotch is served on the rocks and the barmaid has an interesting face, I'm usually not too fussy...
Well... One atmosphere of pressure is the pressure at the sea surface (1013 milliBar) (The weight of the air above you) Zero atm (bar) would be a vacuum. Under the surface we use Bar or psi (1 bar app. 14.7 psi) So... Your ambient pressure (diving?) would be 1 bar at the surface; 2 bar at 10m depth of sea water ( 32.8 feet of sea water), 3 bar at 20m depth of sea water ( 65.6 feet of sea water), 4 bar at 30m depth of sea water ( 98.4 feet of sea water), 5 bar at 40m depth of sea water (131.2 feet of sea water), 6 bar at 50m depth of sea water (164.0 feet of sea water), etc. You need to remember to ad the 1 bar (atm.press.) of air above water.
