It is late to start a thread about this year's Cannes Yacht Festival but one thing did happen at the show that warrants the attention of the world. It isn't a yacht sale, listing, or announcement. However, a yacht did beach itself during the show. The yacht in question is said to be Sundeck 550, around 17-meters LOA. No injuries were reported and the yacht did not have a breach of its hull to cause any pollution in the area. Below photo by Instagram user @isabellechevrier . It is not clear what caused the vessel to come ashore in the manner it did at this point. The Cannes Yachting Festival finished today after starting on the 12th of September.
Yacht was towed the same evening (Saturday) and has damage (apparently minor) to the running gear. The yacht was a private one, and was a guest to the Cannes show, attending with his yacht. Apparently the owner was having lunch when all this happened. A spoke person from Sundeck said the yacht should be back running in a week or two.
Somebody messed up. Not what you want or need to see during a yacht festival. Nor want to hear two weeks to repair. Bummer.
That's one part of the Cannes Bay where you don't anchor in a strong blow, very poor holding ground. My late Grandfather's old wooden motoryacht also got blown onto that beach a few years ago and was destroyed.
It was very windy over the weekend and on Sunday very few boats left for seatrials since it was too windy and also harder for the divers to sort out the anchors crossing each other in the port. Here is our new 60 Open waiting to get in after a seatrial on Friday. It was a good show with a lot of visitors though.
I saw it happen. I was having lunch at the Carlton hotel beach restaurant when suddenly the vessel was sitting on the beach with nobody inside it.
