    A) Because you want to cruise the Med.
    B) Who says they won't? If one gets an idea for a revenue source that works, it's not long before everyone follows suit. Even if it doesn't work, taxes are seldom repealed.
    C) At least symbolically they are sticking it to the rich, a theme that is gaining momentum around the world.

The yachting community had best hope that a lot of Italian politicians are yacht owners, because they will be the only ones voting against this legislation if it in fact comes up.

As a side note, a few minutes ago it was announced that the number of police in the U.S. killed in the line of duty this year has risen 14% and the reason sited is budget cuts. A lot of people will be thinking of that number when the choice comes down to cuts or taxes unless someone can come up with a 3rd revenue source for these governments.
I pointed out earlier that this thread is another version of the "Wealth Gap Widens". Unless a new tax is put out as a news bulletin with no comment, it is absolutely a political thread. Someone wants services cut instead of taxes raised. Sounds familiar. So if the purpose of this discussion is to try and pressure the Italian government to not proceed with plans for this tax go at it and have a debate on both sides. But if this is just a notification then it should have been stopped after the first post and YF gone back to yachting discussions.

"Monti's government agreed Sunday to slap taxes on primary residences and luxury goods like yachts, high-performance cars and private airplanes..."

It seems they have big plans, now at the lawmakers for approval (and adjustments) Monti Takes Italy's Austerity Plan To Lawmakers | National Memo | Breaking News, Smart Politics

Can we continue this discussion on YF:s without involving all of our personal ideas on politics and keep it to what may happen to boats in Italy in the first place..?

Sorry, but you may have missed the title of the link you just posted "smart politics". We already know what may happen to boats in Italy. It's probably going to get more expensive to bring them there. Other than the news of this proposed tax this whole thread is absolutely about politics. It's seeking to make noise in order to influence the decision of Italian lawmakers on where they should or should not go for their budget fix. Yacht tax, VAT, garbage collection fees or police pay, etc.; it's all Italian and European politics. Have the discussion or don't. Personally I think the thread should have closed after the news. But this is at least the second political discussion that has started up here with the intention of pushing a particular political point of view and then complaints of politics started when opposing points of view were mentioned. Is YF a political forum or the front for a certain political ideology or is it about boats? If it's about boats then it needs to be monitored more closely to cut politics off fast. We have a bunch of elections coming up in the U.S. next year. This would be a good time to decide.

AMG..brothers episode was about 15 yrs ago.

I see the Italy problem as a look inside the socialist nature of the Euro Governments and to a lesser extent the drift in the US to similar issues, if and when they get things under control do they give back the tax increases ?? probably no, take the $$ to get re elected and offer more goofy programs which got them in trouble in the first place.

You do not have to far from the US to see a similar set of historical similarities, research the years in British Columbia Canada from 1970 to present and see the big swings from socialist politicians to those more conservative, also, see the years from 1965 to present in Canada's flirtation with socialism from hard line to moderate, the facts show that socialism drags the economy down, reduces ambition among the young and unemployed and creates a system of dependency upon the Government which after a change in philosophy, cuts are needed as are revenue increases to pay the debt and it's real difficult to keep the cuts and give back the revenue, in the meantime the smart ones have gotten richer and the lots of the "others" become protesters.
