Why do I see so many back cushions that have a space between them and the seat cushion? I see them just about everywhere; bridges, aft decks and interiors. A fellow could lose his wallet or car keys back there! I see no function, no increase in comfort. Is it a "look"? If so it is lost on me.

Just a guess--makes it easier to clean that area to remove dropped food, etc.

If sloped and designed properly keeps them from holding water.

Most people on boat decks aren't carrying a lot of things around in their pockets still.

Does the opening also help with air flow in hot weather - I think so? I have full cuhions for my teak cockpit chairs. In the summer its the seat portion only for that reason.
