A container ship struck the Baltimore bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning bringing down the entire span-sections of the bridge.

I cannot imagine the poor folks driving along to have the road disappear in front of them.
    What a nightmare
    So sad.

That's who I am referring to.
I have passed over and under that bridge many times.
    The CBB also.
Never crossed my mind that one of them might be that vulnerable

0130 reported cargo ship hit this bridge. it went down like a child's Erector set. The horror of those lost is unspeakable.
The construction workers, may they be found.
There was a reported mayday that was able to stop road traffic quickly.

God bless those who are lost and keep the SAR safe.

This will be a major disruption to river cargo and vehicle traffic for months perhaps years.

Mind blowing that port don’t have tugs on stand by near the bridge when large ship transit near key infrastructure

The video that everybody is watching offers no depth perception nor proper angle of the bridge to ship.
The ship had long ago made way and tugs were long left behind. Steaming nicely in the channel.
Then, All lights went out, came back on, heavy engine exhaust, anchor dropped and lights out and on and off,,,, crunch..
I fear the worst issue was backing hard (heavy engine exhaust) causing the single prop ship's aft to shift to port, bow to stb to the bridge support.

It is sad and maddening that this can still happen these days.
I also don't think there were real large protecting fenders in place as learned the hard way after the Tampa Bay bridge disaster years ago.

...or even a protocol of escort once set free with the pilot. She also seemed to be steaming pretty darn fast...

    Possibly with the current.
Speed over the bottom is impressive when you still have to operate faster than the water under you.
Could have been this same current on her port side, that pushed her out of the channel.

Quite likely correct, and it certainly got away from him in a hurry.

Capt., you answered all my questions I was thinking all day this these reporters just don't fill in the details.
I am surprised there were not enough bunkers all over protecting the bridge like around the sunshine skyway.

I read somewhere that some bridges have been protected, why this one is wasn’t ? Who knows. Government incompetence…

I can not get a image of the Tampa Bay bridge.
I have an image from the Dames Point bridge in Jax and of the FSK bridge that got clobbered.
Note that the Jax bridge has remote fenders that may be in a position to block a collision with the bridge support.
I have no idea what those micro islands are for along side of the FSK bridge.
Any bridge engineers out there to help explain these designs?

Flew into BWI airport last night 1opm (BWI less than 10 miles from FSK bridge) was a windy gusty night.

FYI.....Bridge was named for Francis Scott Key who composed our National Anthem "Star Spangled Banner" while anchored off Ft McHenry during War of 1812 British invasion (bridge and fort are within eyesight of each other)

Sadly this catastrophe and closure of the port will have a long lasting negative economic impact on on the Port of Baltimore and the mostly blue colored communities that surround it

Prayers extended for deceased, their families and loved ones, and also the many who may experience financial hardships being unemployed with the Port closed and road/bridge closed for a lengthy period of time (possibly years ???)

If which ever bureaucracy is responsible for cleaning up the main channel gets its act together, it should not take long to pull the wreckage and clear the channel. The rest of the bridge can be removed without affecting marine traffic. I don’t think it will have a lasting impact on the port. They have to clear the main channel quickly so vessels trapped in port can get out

it took 5 years to build the bring in the 70s hopefully it can be rebuilt faster than that. The long term impacts will be traffic.

Same here. I've passed over and under it as well. The video doesn't do justice to just how big that bridge was. I've even tied up to the (very small) dolphins they have in place to protect it from alissions. I don't know if it hit one of them and obliterated it, or just missed it and hit the abutment. But, it's strange that after the Tampa Bay Skyline Bridge tragedy that there are still bridges without adequate protection from this type of accident. Whatever it would have costs, it's has to be a drop in the bucket to what a new bridge is going to cost. Not to mention the lost lives and lost revenue while the port is close.

My overhead pic above does not show them, but there were remote protection fenders.
The pic below shows one on the other side of the bridge. Kind of small ???
I can imagine, that ship clobbered the protection fender then the bridge support.
The hull has to be sitting on the first fender and bridge support remains.
I wonder if the ship has hull damage? Any leaks?
