Looking for some thoughts on a replacement windlass for the 80 foot Burger.

the old one is a fossil and probably only good for an anchor itself at this point. It takes up a good bit of deck space too.

Any suggestions on make/model to replace it and whether to go hydraulic/24v, etc would be appreciated

I m not a huge fan of hydraulic windlasses unless absolutely necessary. Loose hydraulics and you can’t raise anchor…

do you have a thruster? If electric you probably already have batteries at the bow. If hydraulic then you already have hydraulic there so it may be easier to go with an hydraulic windlass.

I have an old Galley Maid on my personal boat but I’ve had good luck with Maxwells on boats I ve ran, both electric and hydraulic

I put a Maxwell 24v vertical on mine 12 years ago. After they resolved an initial problem with the chain/rope wheel it has been great since. I believe mine is the 3500 model but that would likely be too small for your boat. I'm using a 72# anchor and 100' of 3/8" chain. I routinely anchor in 300' + of water for bottom fishing so my windlass gets a work out.

The current windlass is the original Ideal and it is powered of the AC side of the panel, so basically the generators.

we have a 210 lb anchor on there now, with a chain and rope, but I will be replacing both when we do this - new windlass, new chain and line.

I looked at maxwells, but had a hard time finding any dealers up here in New England?

Aquarius makes a vertical model it says is good up to 90’ boats, but I’m not familiar with the brand.

Defender carries maxwells, they may not stock the bigger ones but they should be able to special order them. And they usually have the best prices.

my only gripe about the maxwells we had on the 84 I used to run was that the chain stripper was attached from under the windlass so when the chain jammed and bent the stripper, we had to pull the whole thing to replace the stripper. We solved that by drilling holes thru the deck to access the bolts.

I replaced my Ideal with a Lofrans.
Always was a Lorfrans fan and when it came time for our boat, automatically went there.
    So glad we did.

Lofrans and Muir Make great stuff. Imtra sales and supports these and others very well.
Contact Ray Lavoie for great support.

Reached out to Defender. They’re in my back yard and I’m there frequently.

we will see what options they give me.

    thanks all

I´d also consider a Lofrans Titan A, they come in 240V, 120V, 24V and hydraulic, it´s a matter of choice. And they are horizontal windlasses like yours, good quality and reliable standard of-the-shelf porducts. Or a Titan B if you wnat two chain gypsies.
