I had the helm pump rebuilt last season, after install a fitting was leaking a little, through the access under the console into the vinyl of the headliner. There's no discoloration but the pics tell the story. I've already stuffed absorbent up under it but the oil has seeped into the material. Replacement would involve at least 4 new sections. Any ideas? Would heat be able to dissipate/evaporate it or is the material shot?
There's got to be a better way. I see this photo and so many saggy headliners in boats, Yuk. Which builders have solved this glued on vinyl headliner business?
You need something to glue to. That damaged headliner is de-laminating and falling apart, 100 years ahead of schedule.
Last year I had the fwd. head liner replaced by a local marine upholstery shop. Their up there with some super velcro and the vinyl just glued to thin plywood. Appears to me yours are history.
It s done. The foam backing has separated from the vinyl If you can match the vinyl, it s not a big job. Just pull the panels, strip, spray headliner glue, attach the vinyl and staple on the back side. Sailright has a good selection of headliner material
The headliner is entirely made of thin vinyl, no foam backing. It is "suspended" attached to wooden battens that it hangs from, if that makes sense. It has 'give' to it in between the frames that support it. Unfortunately multiple large pieces are sewn end to end and of course the damage is right in the #%@% middle
Foam backing may not have the correct term, think cloth with a synthetic (vinyl like) laminate. The steering fluid has destroyed the adheadsion between the two.
