  1. 106.7-meter "Black Pearl" Delivered By OceAnco
The world's largest dyna-rigged sailing yacht, "Black Pearl" has finally been delivered. Since leaving the Netherlands last week, she has arrived in Gibraltar making her first Mediterranean stop. This yacht has been around for a long time since - being launched without being delivered - leaving many to speculate about the circumstances. However, she is delivered and has swapped the Dutch flag for the Cayman Islands.
  2. The design of Black Pearl is a collaborative effort between a number of designers and firms. Nuvolari & Lenard, Ken Freivokh, BMT Nigel Gee, Dykstra Naval Architects are among the star names with their stamp left around the four-deck 352-footer. One of the distinctive features is the design of the bow which features hybrid or retro and conventional melding into one. A conventionally angled and flared bow meeting a partial reverse bow halfway leading the way to a 'hybridity' that is certainly different from what we have witnessed in recent years.
  3. Construction was in steel and aluminium with the latter being used for the superstructure. She is a spacious yacht with a 15-meter overall beam; yes that is basically 50-feet wide! Onboard there is accommodation for twelve guests in six cabins. Perhaps Black Pearl's most distinctive feature is her carbon dyna-rig masts. She isn't the first large yacht to use this system as that title goes to the Perini Navi-built "Maltese Falcon". These 70-meter high-tech masts hold up some 2,900 square meters of black 'sail cloth' (dacron) representing 15 sails when all are deployed. It is suggested that this beast can attain a 30-knot speed in the 'right' wind and sea conditions. The yacht is also said to have several energy-saving technologies onboard. BMT, Nigel Gee collaborated with OceAnco to create Black Pearl's hybrid propulsion system as well as other onboard systems such as waste heat recovery.
  4. Other features that can be seen at night are in the external lighting. The hull includes a suite of underwater lighting that is capable of a symphony of colour changes. The three large oval windows that dominate the upper portion of the hull can also be lit creating a distinctive focal point. Of course the masts are lit via a myriad of uplights in the curved spars. Black Pearl is a truly remarkable superyacht. Many technologies have gone into the finalization of this design and as she is now delivered we will see her roaming the seven seas.
