I seriously thought we had a thread for Bannenberg and Rowell already but as I was searching for it, I wasn't finding any so a new thread has been developed. I found a blog for the designers, interesting for those whom might be interested. bannenbergandrowell
Dickie Bannenberg has hinted that they will be redoing the interior of "DREAM" later this year. I think they meant the recently sold A&R the former "Excellence III".
Just curious...what is the extent of services provided by Bannenberg & Rowell? Do they do full naval/architectural engineering like Stability, seakeeping and performance predictions, structural and electrical engineering, as well as tank testing, etc? Or are they just a company that does superb exterior and interior design?? Many thanks,
This is the B&R team... Bannenberg & Rowell Design This is what they do... Bannenberg & Rowell Design Maybe K!W! could shed more light on this...
Morning..... Quoted from their website as to what they do We aim to give our clients the freshest and most creative work around. We underpin this with a well-organised office, armed with tried and trusted systems for drawing delivery, specifying and budgetary control. We don’t forget that nobody actually needs a yacht and the process needs to bring them pleasure. We are there for our clients throughout the journey of creating their new yacht: design meetings; visits to the shipyard; checking on suppliers and subcontractors. Most clients want us to continue to be involved even after delivery. So when there’s a need for something new, or something to replace, we’ll take care of that too. According to the site, the only Naval Architect is James Carley..so, yes, someone who has actually used them can offer better advice.. Cheers,
I just find this photo funny, with Henk de Vries being used as a height marker onboard a yacht. Bannenberg & Rowell
For you die hard Jon Bannenberg fans Dickie Bannenberg has just published quite a comprehensive history of Jon's career from his beginnings as an interior designer in London until his untimely death in 2002. So far I have found the book very informative and quite entertaining as Dickie included interviews with many of his clients, many of whom became great friends, that are quite revealing along with a plethora of pictures of his design creations from furniture to his iconic yachts! http://www.bannenbergandrowell.com/a-life-of-design/ Be forewarned that by the time you pay for shipping the 8 pound coffee table beauty to the US you will have spent $213.50 which IMHO is worth every penny!
I am enjoying the heck out of the Bannenberg book. Lots of insight into how many of the yachts he designed came into being. Although known best for his extraordinary yachts 25% of his firms business was architecture with a little industrial design thrown in on the side. I also did not know that Jon was a principal and apparently a major driving force in Oceanfast Yachts as they went out of business only a few years after Jon passed in 2002. Fortunately Jon lived long enough to collaborate extensively with Larry Ellison on perhaps what is the crown jewel of Jon's career, Rising Sun which launched in 2004. At 453' Rising Sun was the 4th largest yacht in the world at that time, she has now slipped to number 11.
So am I, especially the drawings of yachts never built and therefore unknown to most of us. Also the stories about the man himself, he really became a legend in his lifetime and this book is showing that no other designer, nor before or after him, comes nowhere near what he achieved. I only met him in the late 90:s, but I got to see the studio at 6 Burnsall Street, met with Paula (his PA) and Dickie and I still have a number of faded Faxes (!) with his typical intro and signing. Nice memories!
Hi Lars, I completely agree with you on that! He is without a doubt my favorite designer as Obsession, Mystique, Lady Arraya(ex OpalC), and Perseverance II are at the top of my lottery list. Do you think the quality is there on his Oceanfast creations and are they adequate ocean going vessels? Did you work with them on any projects you care to share with us?
I think all the Oceanfast boats were with Phil Curran as Naval Architect, but the quality and ocean going I can not judge. My favorites were Parts VI and Oceana C. Sadly we never got a project going together, there were plans, but the time ran out.
Discokachina lent me his Bannenberg book and it is fantastic. I had worked with Jon on one of his collaborations with Pendennis. I have many old friends in the book and it was a pleasant trip down memory lane. This book provides historical content in showing Jon's genius and talents. Well worth the expense, not just for a coffee table book, but for a well-worth read. Judy
Well apparently I have to strike another Bannenberg creation off my Lottery list as Derecktor reported in their latest newsletter Volume 2015 Issue #2 that they have completed major structural and exhaust modifications on She’s a 10 ex-Mystique. She is currently moored at the Bahia Mar Marina in Fort Lauderdale. Ditto for Obsession who was sold on Wednesday, 20 May 2015 while retaining her mysterious moniker for the time being.
