Y4 pre-study material?

    Absolutely true! I guess the problem is that the actual questions are very specific and request specific answers rather than general engineering. (Please note that I passed all three Y4 modules with high grades on my first attempt so I know how to answer the way MCA wants it :) )


    Yes, I totally agree! I have been looking for a position as 2/E for more than a year without any luck so far. The only jobs I can get is as sole engineer due to licence requirements. Which means that I without any proper licence at all is responsible for the practical safety and well-being of a multi-million-dollar yacht and its guests!!

    Weird, that I'm not qualified to work under supervision but it is OK for me to work unsupervised...

    Some things I probably do in a good way, other things I' probably do less well, but how can I learn without a second opinion?

    I studied mechanical engineering in upper secondary school, I have a Masters Degree in mechanical engineering and then I've spent 15 years as a software engineer which makes me think I have some usable experience and knowledge that a 20-year-old doesn't. To retake math classes, basic mechanical and electrical theory on a level far below my MSc seems to me a waste of time. I also have to take English classes and all other "standard" stuff they require for the exam. Even if a school would accept me, I would probably be retired by the time I got my ticket :)

    However, if there were dedicated marine engineering courses I wouldn't mind spending the time and money to take them. I still have to be street smart though, since these courses may be less worth than service time as sole engineer on my current yacht in the eyes of a potential employer.

    And as we seem to agree on; the best training is on-the-job, under a skilled highly certified engineer, so I will still try to get that 2/E job even if I have to work as sole engineer until I get my Y3...
