So, who can tell me what this thing is, and what it does? i have one on the outboard side of each engine. The starboard one leaks. My guess is oil cooler of some type. I've never seen one that looked like this before though. I checked an identical Post with the same 6-71TI's and he doesn't have them, so I'm guessing they were added later at some point. So what are they? What do they do? Are they necessary? Good to have? Or do I not need them?

Thanks in advance! The weather is warming up and I'm ready to get back to work on this thing!

I had something similar. Looks like your airbox drains are going into them at the bottom to collect the sludge. Mine also had a hose going from the blowby canisters into this type of unit as well. I don't see that in your pictures. Your first photo shows the canister on the side of the block. There is some kind of hose between the two canisters. Where is that going? Airbox drains need to go into a container to catch the sludge. I installed Racor CCV system in place of where you have these old units. They work great. No more oily mess all over.

That does look like a custom airbox drain. Any container will do. If so it will have incredibly dirty oil/sludge in it. the line(s) leading to it should have a check valve. Just empty them every oil change or once a year. You should clean your check valves at the same time.

Some 671's with air-seps recapture the drain from the airbox into the crankcase but why would you want to mix that nasty stuff into your oil. You have the best setup.

Thanks for the info. As soon as the weather allows, i'll get down there and try to drain them. Is there anything in them that should be cleaned aside from the check valves, or do i just drain the sludge and go?

The check valves are usually attached directly to the block just above the oil pan. But it doesn't need to be. They are somewhere between there and the container. Should have two per engine. They are supposed to let crap out of the airbox at idle and seal at higher rpms.
