Vintage Yacht Funnel Color

    Evening Gentlemen (and Ladies) -

    I enjoy learning about yachting customs, etiquette, and ritual. Why are many vintage motoryachts’ dry stack funnels painted varying shades of pale yellow? I know commercial ship owners painted cargo and passenger funnels in a livery unique to the company for easy identification and branding. But it seems many of the more prominent vintage yachts with funnels are wearing yellow funnels: Christina O, SS Delphine, Freedom, Enticer, Dona Amelia, Talitha, Nero, Eden, Istranka, Seagull II, Blue Bird.

    Is there special significance or history behind the pale or flat yellow color?

    It was an old tradition begun in the days of the great steam yachts. The yellowish color was called "buff".
