Review: Calixas 105' Expedition Yacht

  1. The master bath is located in the foremost section of the ship, in the bow (hence the angle of the blue tiled wall in the background). With a glassed-in shower, a full-size whirlpool tub and separate wash-basins, the master is slightly deco and definitely utilitarian. Still, it picks up cues found throughout, such as the Wenge flooring and walnut cabinetry, topped off with molded Corian faux marble.
  2. On the Lower Deck, only slightly less plush than the master stateroom, the VIP stateroom is at the bow, full width. It features a queen size center-line berth, as well as an ensuite head and tiled shower. There are twin vanities as well as a desk and vanity in the carpeted stateroom.
  3. Two guest staterooms are also in the Lower Deck, facing each other across the beam. They each offer ensuite heads and showers, full carpeting and copious stowage. Both have large, twin hanging lockers, bed lamps and mirrored doors.
  4. There are a total of five baths on the Lower Deck. One VIP, two guest and two crew. Shown here is the guest port facility that continues the “bath house” theme found on the vessel. Calixas makes no reservations about the business of bathrooms. They are a place to shower, shave & split!
  5. Boarding at the stern, the huge transom garage, with its hydraulically raised cover, could easily nest a Mini Cooper, along with a full machine shop of working tools; or of course a brace of large water toys. A couple of steps down, the generous pathway leads to the 7’ headroom, walk-around engine compartment.
  6. Air-conditioned with windows to a reciprocating view, the Engineer's Station is adequately sized for a much bigger boat. Although racks abound for books, they are merely a manual reference to a virtually engineered vessel. Every single component in this yacht was computer generated. Even generic parts were created in 3-D, for fit, placement and seamless integration. Can you say... Boeing?
  7. Housing the heartbeat are twin CAT 3406E rated at 474 hp each. Calixas is capable of a respectable 12.5 knot cruise for 1625 miles @ 1700 rpm. Slowing the pulse, 3030 nautical miles can be covered at 970 rpm. An unusual and very welcome feature here are elevated floors that pull-away, granting access underneath the engines. And if there's work to be done, Calixas delivers here as well, with not one, but two large counter tops for assembly and inspection. A fully stocked, automotive-style tool chest is located under the corner-based workstation.
  8. Montie Twining is obviously a hands-on owner/builder, as shown by the creative planning throughout, with innovations other builders may be quick to emulate. His creativity and innovations in computerized modern living have revolutionized certain phases of Americas life, and perhaps, chances are yachting will be next on his list.

    For certain, the CaliXas 105 – is a great surprise!​

  14. Walk-around, covered decks with teak soles. Notice the reflection against the gelcoat. There are no waves, no ripples. Simply excellent mold work.
  15. The flybridge sink is recessed into the radar/crows nest arch to reduce wind turbulence...

  18. Best seat in the house! For altitude reference, Curt-C and the M-140 are docked in the background. Both of these yachts are 140' plus. The crows nest on the Calixas 105' is looking *down* on these boats!
  19. Custom built by McMullen & Wing, this is the Calixas C-18 tender...
  20. And one last look up the "eye-full" tower, the Calixas 105' has one very busy arch...
