The problem with using a camera is that it is monoptic not bioptic so judging distance becomes difficult especially with moving objects. Still a usefull tool but not a cure all.

I do it find this to be a problem when it comes to a back up cam. Usually they are set up pretty high, on top of the aft deck, pointing downward giving great view or the platform corners and docks or obstacles. Now if the can is set up too low facing aft, the yes it will be hard to judge distances

from what ive read the 32 seems to work better.. did you update the camera? seems to be a critical thing to do and not in the instructions..

Yes, I updated the camera before I started to use it. There is a new smaller model now, the housing is smaller, Hero 3+, that should be better, but I'll probably give my away and buy the new Sony just out...

    Reviving this old thread...

My gopro 3 mysteriously disappeared a few months ago :( and I debated whether or not I was going to get a new one or instead go for an underwater compact camera like the nikon or Olympus. I had developed a love hate relationship with that gopro... I hated the clumsy interface, unresponsive optional touch screen and the crashing, delayed, unreliable wifi connection. But I loved the quality of the stills and videos, it was so good that some of the footage ended in the hit music video Timber (the piano and the nurse sharks)

I ended up getting a new gopro 4 silver, what a difference compared to the 3.

All of these issues have been addressed in the 4. Easy to use menus easy to use built in touch screen and a reliable wireless connection.

And,,, the delay when using the app to preview the camera has been cut to nearly nothing. It could now be used as an occasional back up cam.

Have they done anything about the battery life? Whenever I have used my GoPro 3 the battery gives out quickly.

Haven't used it long enough to know. I didn't find it to be that bad on the 3... It definitely had to be recharged after each use but would last long enough for most use

One thing I learned the hard way is to lock the SD card so it can't rewrite over the video. I thought I had the camera turned off but when I went to look at the video I learned once the chip was full it started overwriting the video from the beginning with a video of a wall.

You need to use this thing a bit , like mentioned above the controls and interface aren't real intuitive.
