Importing used boat to Europe re CE certification

    I need some help please clarifying the status of an owner bringing a 55' boat to personally cruise in Europe. It is a 2008 originally built in China and cruised since in US. Must it be CE compliant? Is that only if he intends to resell at some point?

    The boat must be CE compliant, but it can be made after importing it in Europe. But the sooner the better as it must comply with the rules of that date and especially emission rules are getting harder by the day....

    There is CE inspectors in Florida.
    Helped a European guy find a sailboat a few years ago and he got it CE certified, then imported to Norway.
    He had to change the main engine for emission requirements and had to show stability calculations, etc.
    On a 2008 the engine may be new enough to meet the emission requirements however and perhaps the Chinese manufactor already have the boats CE Certified?

    Don't forget the electronics, VHFs etc, need a CE logo on the back.

    If it is only going to be cruised in the EU by a private non EU resident I do not see where it needs to have CE Certification.

    This is a whole different scenario to selling it in the EU.

    Sorry! I try to give as many details as might be needed for an accurate response, but I neglected to mention that the owner lives both in the US and in British Isles.

    If he is no longer a UK resident he should be able to cruise there no problem subject to the length of time he wants to stay there per year, if these are exceeded something called VAT will soon be asked for.

    There is quite a difference between being resident and having a residence, you may want to ask the Owner to clarify his/her own particular situation to avoid doubt.

    But he is a resident of only one of the countries. That may or may not be the same one he's a citizen of.

    This is an excellent thread. I have been communicating with a buyer who cruises in Croatia. His desired boat with almost new petrol engines went under contract and he missed it. I was ready to suggest a boat re-powered in 1997 with Cummins diesels but it sounds like that age engine won't make the cut.

    Last I heard they need to be CE certified/approved engines built 2001 or newer.
