    Also, these are on my own Yacht and the manuals match the gen sets..

    The Onan's mentioned above are standard diesel engines that have a starter to turn the engine over, and a normal alternator to produce DC power, and the generator end is connected to the engine to produce AC power. However the motor has to be turning a certain speed to produce the 70 volts before it will run on it's own allowing you to release the start switch.
