    Greetings All,
Thank you for taking a look at my post. I recently purchased a 1989 Carver 3807 with Mercruiser 454 Engines and Borg Warner drives. The problem is that when starting the Starboard engine it starts in forward gear, I cant find a Neutral position even though it appears to be in Neutral. Also, I thought the Neutral safety switch should prohibit the motor from starting with the boat in any gear, anyone ever see this before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks...

Sounds like something loose in the cable or brackets. The safety switch is usually in the controls so if the control is in neutral it will allow cranking but the lever on the gear may be in gear

Check the position of the lever on the year and compare both engines. Move the controls and see what happens on the gear

Single controls for each trans and throttle or dual? Is this new issue? Have you looked at the cable connection on the transmission? Manually put the starboard engine in neutral at the gear. Start it. Move the gear shifter. See what happens.

If the gear lever at the transmission is in neutral and it starts in gear, you're going to need to rebuild the gear. A lot of times if the boat sits un-run for months, the clutches sitting in the oil will swell and that will cause them to rotate the shaft even with the lever in neutral.

How long does the shaft spin? Until you move the lever or does it eventually stop spinning by itself?
