Here is the original design from the late 30ies.
Original she was named Edi II and built for the swedish general consul Torsten Kreuger. With 3 Wright V12 engines the 31,5 meter aluminium yacht had a top speed over 30knots!
Very impressing speed for a yacht in the 30ies.

Even today, that's still flying for a 100' boat!

In the late 50's, my parents bought an 85' ASR (Air-Sea-Rescue) hull from the Navy and proceeded to convert it to a private yacht. If I recall, the boat had triple V-12 Packards and was capable of 60 knots. Can't say for sure, I wasn't even a sparkle in my mother's eye yet. But I probably put her through less aggravation in my teenage years than that ASR did in 2 years. They removed the deckhouse, ripped out the Packards, installed twin gas motors and proceeded to build out the interior and a new superstructure. When I think of all that work, I'm glad I wasn't born yet!

Way to go Joe! That boat had become driftwood on YF. I'm doing a Palm Beach cruise this weekend (weather pending). Maybe I can find her again, or something new. Well, in this case... old! ;)

    Thanks!

You can't miss her. She's in the same place at Riviera Beach Marina.
Strange, scenery hasn't changed much along the waterfront here in Palm Beach (well not the boats anyhow. Waterfront is changing daily!)

    United Spirit as original

    Hi
I was wondering if you had managed to trace United Spirit's history. Id be very curious to see what she looked kicked before she was modernised. I often wonder why people take a unique classic boats and in "modernising" them, convert them into something that retains none of the charm of the original and, instead, is something that is neither fish nor fowl. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder and United Spirit's current look my be an improvement

Here is a thread with a little more on her; http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/general-yachting-discussion/9275-united-spirit.html

And I agree on modernising classics, it usually is to destroy them. But this yacht at least got an interesting look of her own...

United spirit - modernisation of a classic

Thanks - she's an interesting boat both as original and in her new guise but I can't help thinking she'd have been better left with at least a vestige of her old character and style. in any event I can see more reason to have modernised in the way they did than was the case with Iluka, the Australian wooden motor yacht that has recently had a reported $14M spent in transforming her from an attractive and traditionally styled 1970's motoryacht into a poor imitation of a Benettii...

I'm currently rebuilding a 61ft Feadship, launched as Tiky and now called Alto Volante. She was originally built with an open helm but had a really ugly Pilothouse built in the 1980s. I anguished about whether or not to leave her with an open helm or build a new PH and in the end did the latter but we've tried to give the PH the same lines as the st of the superstructure and built it in such a way that it is easily removable using a small crane, the whole process taking about 15 minutes. if you do a search for Vintage Feadship on YF you'll find a number of posts and loads of pics.
    Regards
