I recently purchased a 1988 Bertram 37' convert, bringing the vessel back from the dead sort of fixing issues. I noticed bringing her up on plane the cockpit scuppers were letting huge amounts of water into the boat and resulting on aft bilge pump to constantly come on. I tried to replace the scuppers and know they are installed the right way. I still getting up to plane get large amounts thrown onto cockpit area. Can't only be my vessel, I've tried adjusting trim tabs but can't always get it to stop. Looks like previous owner tried mounting clam shells on bow side of scupper outlet but must not have fixed the issue and removed them. Any ideas? or suggestions?

YachtForums is a community of considerable knowledge but I think some who have read your post may be having the same trouble that I had connecting the dots.

Simply put..I replaced the cockpit scuppers , I know they are installed correctly, Still have major issue under way and throttling up as the scuppers open and sea water gushes into the cockpit the wrong way. Not sure if Bertram poor design? they are located on the sides of vessel and not the stern. The force of wind of side splash force scuppers open and seawater rushes in

The scuppers should open outward, not inward. I have seen several manufacturers incorparate the clamshell in front of the deck drain opening into their fiberglass hull and it works well at keeping spray from coming in an open scupper. Roscioli's donzi's come to mind.

Sadly, getting support from Bertram on older boats is lacking. I am happy to point you to the kids at High-Tide Marine in Marathon (FL Keys) Florida. They have been a great resource for us ('78, 58' MY) and my customers from vintage 20s & up.

Please tap on them for any ole Bert questions.

Keep us up on what you find and how you fixed it. Pictures are also very helpful on topics like this.

    Hi,

If you have a hole in the side for the scupper to drain from surely fitting a clam shell with the opening facing aft will draw the water out as you accelerate.

Having it facing forwards will force water up it into the cockpit.

A clamshell in front of the scupper facing aft will direct the water away from the scupper, just remember that it cannot impede the scupper flapper. If I remember correctly, these Bertram side scuppers had a rubber flap with a chrome bezel around them that opened outward and the rubber sat inside the bezel part and mostly sealed the scupper when water was not forcing them open.
