Can someone direct me to a resource for rudder parts? I recently ran hard aground and during the subsequent un-grounding, one rudder was damaged. Actually the mount/packing was cracked and the wood support above was shattered.
Buck-Algonquin should have the rudder stuffing box, steering arms, etc. The rudder board will have to be built. You should be able to get a piece of mahogany in Houston. Kemah hardware used to stock back in the day. It's worth a phone call. Next time you run agrould straighten the rudders before you start pulling on the boat. You may have to replace the shaft on the rudder.
Our hardware is from Buck. You will have to find a distributor to order the parts. Another website I found but haven't used is marinehardware dot com that has an extensive catalog online as another possible source.
Thank you dsharp and mwwhit1 for the extremely valuable information. I didn’t know about Buck-Algonquin. Looks like AER in Seabrook is a distributor. I will have to better assess the damage when she’s on the hard.
When I bought mine, I serviced everything and also renewed or refurbished complete rudder configuration. We made new brackets out of thick aluminum, with new seals and bearings. One of my rudder shafts was also bended a little, but could be straightened by Trent Marant from Pattons Marine Service (FL) When on de dry, check your shaft seals too, we choose the tides system, a onetime investment, with some spare seals on the shaft, they hold for many many years!
Take a close look at the rudder shaft. There's a pretty good chance that it's bent. It doesn't take much of a bend to make it a chore to drop the rudder. I've done business with AER for years. Their son runs the business now. Great people to do business with.
