We are looking for the next boat and for retirement. We wanted a trawler but they are way out of our budget. so we are looking at the older 61' and 63'Hatteras CPMY with 12v71 and 8v71 DD's. This boat meets our budget but we are looking for some reliable data on Fuel burn at 8-10 knots. Can anyone give us details on fuel consumption at trawler speeds as our budget to travel is not unlimited and want more days on the water than less because of a high fuel burn.

Should be just under 10gph at 8kts creeping to 18gh at 10kts. 8v71s will be a little more economical and cheaper to maintain but won't get the boat on plane should you ever need to run from weather

We have a 55' Hatt convertible with 12v71ti's. We try and run her at 10knots. fuel burn is 12 GPH with the genset running.

This is correct and 8v71's will be 8 GPH, but with the same size vessel you will also lose speed at 1000 rpms compared to the 12 cylinder boat...... maybe 8.5 knots versus 9.8 knots (both at 1000rpms)
