Yanmar 440 hp won't start

    I have twin Yanmar 440 hp diesels. One engine does not turn over. The battery is brand new. I assume I might have a problem with the solenoid on my starter. Am I heading in the right direction?

    It could be many issues. Check to see if it's in neutral, check your battery connections and connections at the starter. You could try jumping the solenoid, but MAKE SURE you know what wires to jump, try tapping on the starter with something, but I'd recommend calling a mechanic out.

    Yes I am in neutral. It is a jet pump with no gear reduction. I will concentrate on the solenoid. Thanks for your help.

    troubleshooting 101... start with the basics. Check th voltage at the starter (between main battery cable and ground)... then at the key switch or starter button, both feed to the switch and when the switch is turned. Next at the solenoid itself.

    Good one Pascal. The opening words are often the most overlooked. I moderate a couple of engineering related groups and I am dumbfounded how many times guys who are supposedly qualified to serve in the roles they are collecting a pay check for completely disregard this simple suggestion.

    There is usually a push button breaker back there above the starter. Do your gauges settle when you turn the key switch on?
