Looking for advice as I just pick-up a 22' Chris Craft dory/tournament fisherman.

Hull is in very good shape, but floor is a little weak in spots, Has anyone seperated the inside structure from the hull, how differcult is it to do and where is the best place to begin. Will post picture as this restoration progresses.

What are your recommendations on epoxy paints ie: awlgrip, interlux etc.

Thanks for any advice in advance

I am in the middle of a 76 CC Dory restoration. She was completely re-powered last summer. I mean everything, engine, tranny, stuffing box, rudder port, cables and electrical - everything new. unfortunately, she was slightly damaged during the storm (Sandy), I just recently finished the fiberglass and filling work, just about ready to paint. I have done a good bit a research to bring her back - certainly have parts/vendor information if you are interested. I am new to the site and can post so pics when I figure that out.

To your question... I took all the rivets out along he rub rail and could never the the hull and topside more than an inch apart anywhere along the seam. Probably need to repair the deck from the topside and then finish with kiwi grip or something like that.

Post some pics, I would love to see it. I am a Dory lunatic, I just love the hull design.

    Hey IRONMAN,

I am in the rip up stages, this dory also went down in Sandy. The floors were soft also, everything else is out, engine ,fuel tank. I'll get some pics up as soon as can.
Parts and venders will be needed and appreciated. I'm going to need everything new, repower, steering, lights, basiclly the only thing I have going is a new aluminum fuel tank, otherwize total rebuild.

Thanks for your reply, keep in touch

Finally some signs of progress, after glassing and filling for the past few weeks....

The console and engine cowling (and gas tank cover - not shown) are complete. After some minor glass repairs around the flange, this is two coats of Interlux Epoxy Prime Kote followed by three coats of Perfection - rolled and tipped. I was skeptical of the R&T application, but if your substrate is properly prepared - sanded flat, then the finish looks as good as spray - with proper technique (learned on the job) and the right thinning (again learned on the job) of coarse - the stuff is pretty amazing.

I will post another pic when the hardware and windscreen have been replaced (the gauge panel is also new)

BTW - color is oyster white, as is planned for the topside, hull will be flag blue.

The console and engine box look great!!!! At least your at the painting stages, I have a long way to go, Have to build a new motor box and a lot of repairs to console. So you like the Perfection epoxy, I'm still up in the air whether to use it or Awlgrip. I'm leaning towards the 545 primer since you can use it below water line.

My 79 Chris Craft 'Cutlass' was done in Awlgrip 2000 as follows: Ice Blue hull, Matterhorn White deck and bottom, and Aristo Blue boot stripe.

The list price in February 1979 was $10,890.00........almost makes you wish Peanut Brain was still president.........on second thought.........

    One learns to love sanding......

In went around and around on paint types. In the end, I realized that I was sensitive to cost and logistics (wasn't going to buy a spray set and no viable location to spray if I were to purchase). So while I thought that Awlgrip was a better product, it was not as user friendly and more expensive than the Interlux stuff.

I have been very satisfied with the Perfection and the Epoxy primecote - absolutely delivers as promised - and the Jamestown videos are really helpful.

As I have told some other folks, if you want it perfect, you should have the hull professionally painted by a reputable vendor.

Painting is ALL about the prep and the thinning. It doesn't matter how good the painter is, whether it is sprayed or rolled/tipped. If the paint is never thinned right, with the right speed of reducer, it will never come out right.

I have always liked the look of those boats. They have nice, crisp/clean classic lines. It's a shame they didn't make more of them. There used to be one around here about 10 years ago or so that Merritt's redid, they painted it and such and it was a light grey in color and a good looking boat. I don't know where it ever ended up.

The weather is really not cooperating here. I am all set to start laying down the topside paint and it has been spitting rain for a week and a half!
