Royal Caribbean International has ordered the world´s largest and most expensive cruise ship. Project Genesis will be a 1181 foot ship and will hold 5400 passengers. Cost around 1 billion $

I'm still waiting for someone to restore an old aircraft carrier as their private yacht! Just think of the tender garages on one of those and fly your G-4 in and land on it! I'm sure it's been thought about.

Looks like a container ship with windows to me maybee in the future we can pre-board our room at our home city and be shipped to our departure location for loading.

As I was arriving at work Tuesday I got a nice surprise, the latest new build is now out of the main hall.

I only took a few months to get to this stage, I clearly remember the keel block laying ceremony, in summer 2005.

I know she is not a yacht but If I get on board for a tour Ill try to take some photos.

While I marvel at the engineering that goes into these gigantic cruise ships, I'm struck by the thought of why build such ships. It seems as though herd mentality has taken over the cruise ship industry. Cram as many people on board as possible. I don't want to go on a vacation with 5400 other people especially on these floating shopping malls they are building these days. Bigger is not always better. The cruise industry has completely perverted the essence of cruising by turning it into a numbers game.

I think ego is really at the bottom of why the cruise industry builds ever larger ships, but they are at a point where the ships have lost all aesthetic appeal. You're right as long as people line up like cattle to be herded on these monstrous hulks the industry will keep building them. So I guess my question should have been who would want to herd themselves onto these gigantic vaction processors. The obvivous answer is people that don't know any better.

you wouldn't be able to fit anything bigger than an S-3 on it and not even paul allen could afford the crew, not to mention operation costs. Not to mention the aircraft would be the most expensive part.

Yes it is a shame it's all about growth (monetary) and size these days, as long as the shipping companies develop business models which are attractive to any given market the ships will grow to take advantage of the benefits of scale.

Every now and then a beautiful ship appears on the drawing board, I personally liked the Radiance class of Ships, some say they had a yacht style.

I would like to try a cruise at least once, but only to Alaska or Transatlantic, I would probably get bored of the food by then, although being on the sea always has its appeal to me.

As long as there are customers willing to go on these ships, cruise lines will build them. A basic rule in Economics of SUPPLY and DEMAND.

Although it's not exactly what we mean by "Getting Away From It All", with 5,000 plus other people around you, it might feel like you never left the city.

I remember not too long ago when hundreds of people got sick on a cruise ship. Imagine all the chaos when you are in the midst of 5,000 plus other passengers, and everyone gets sick. SCARY!
