For Rusty Keaulana, Christmas comes early, as he majestically survives 50 foot wave action in the first heat of the Eddie Aikau Invitational, Dec. 15, 2004.
His competitor, Daryl Virotsky, was not so lucky, taking a 40 foot drop in the spectacular wipeout shown on the bottom photo. He suffered a knee injury, forcing him out of the competition (probably a good thing all things considered).

As a kid, I surfed in the South Florida washing machine. We rarely received the tubular swells that surfers dreamed about, but on occasion... we'd get a day or two of slightly overhead surf (about one story high) and the wipe-outs would leave you dazed for days.

I can't imagine falling off these skyscrapers, not to mention the tsunamis that Laird Hamilton "works" on.
