Derecktor Signs Contract for Largest Yacht Built in US in Over 75 years
[Bridgeport, CT] -- Derecktor Shipyards has announced the contract signing for an 85.3 meter (280 feet) motor yacht, the largest yacht to be built in the United States in over 75 years. In fact, at 2800 tons, it is believed that the Derecktor 85, as the project is currently known, may be the largest yacht ever built in the United States when measured by displacement.
The contract, coming on the heels of Derecktor’s project Gemini (which at launch will be the world’s largest sailing catamaran at 145 ft.) firmly places Derecktor as the leading US builder of large yachts and among the world’s elite.
The new motor yacht has been commissioned by an experienced client who has previously owned two large yachts of European provenance. His selection of Derecktor confirms the yard’s continuing emergence in the select world of super yacht construction.
With naval architecture by Azure Naval Architects of Holland, exterior design by Tim Heywood, and interior design by Liz Dalton of Dalton Designs Inc., the Derecktor 85 brings together some of the top talent in the industry today, befitting a vessel of such scope.
In acknowledging this unique partnership, Tim Heywood states, “This project is of extreme importance to all involved. We have a chance to build a grand and spacious yacht for a knowledgeable and experienced client. The yacht will be of great significance for the United States yacht market, for the yard, for the thousands of subcontractors, and for the design offices in Holland, America and London. We have a lot of work ahead of us!”
Indeed, the Derecktor 85 incorporates virtually every state of the art ship’s systems, safety feature and creature comfort conceivable. She is truly a proper small (or not so small) ship, capable of extended voyaging on the world’s oceans, while keeping her owners and crew in high style and genuine luxury. She boasts a total of 6 decks, with the owners’ and guests’ accommodations representing half of that space -- thus providing unparalleled spaciousness and privacy to its occupants. With a hull to be built of steel and an aluminum superstructure, the Derecktor 85 will provide a blend of strength and weight saving performance and sea keeping.
At the announcement of the contract signing, the client’s representative stated, “We are very excited to begin construction of the Derecktor 85, a vision in the making for several years now. The Derecktor Shipyards team has been working closely with us to bring that dream closer to reality. I am confidant that this collaboration will result in a beautiful vessel which will make us all proud.”
Paul Derecktor, President of Derecktor Shipyards, added, “All of us at Derecktor greatly appreciate being chosen for this job, and are aware of the tremendous challenge ahead. We are committed to making sure the Derecktor 85 takes her place among the great yachts in history.”
