New Launch: Lurssen's 247' "Northern Star"

Lurssen's 247' "Northern Star"
A Yacht to Explore the World

by Kevin Heistermann

Polaris, the celestial North Star, has been a navigation beacon in the night skies for
centuries, both to find the direction of north and to determine ones latitude. However, the
North Star is visible only in the northern hemisphere and cannot be used south of the equator.

Lurssen's latest launch, Northern Star (project Scout), has no such limitation. The 75.4 meter (247 foot) long explorer styled yacht is designed for extensive and extended cruising in either hemisphere requiring only occasional stops in ports, as well as being fully capable of operating in cold climates. The very experienced owner, who has many years behind him as an ocean racing and cruising sailor, required world class design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for his guests and crew.
The design was again handled by Espen Oeino, who gave this new Northern Star a very traditional appearance reflecting the owners ideas. Oeino's design included expansive outdoor spaces forward, aft, and on the sundeck to provide ample seating for open air dining or lounging. Northern Star's six decks offer her 12 guests enormous space for both entertainment and relaxation while traversing the world oceans.

Lurssen's highest technical standards are combined with an abundance of practical and useful features throughout the build, while the owner’s captain, Craig Franks and yacht broker Robert Moran of Moran Yacht and Ship supervised the project and brought in their huge spectrum of experience and consolidated knowledge. The interior was designed by Pauline Nunns who again worked with the owner’s wife on the grand country-home inspired decor, which is exquisitely executed in every single detail.
Powered by 2 CAT engines of 2000 kW each, Northern Star can reach a top speed of 17 knots and has a range of 6000 nm. Advanced sound-proofing and anti-vibration features guarantee an extremely quite running of the yacht. A stabilising system and her ice strengthened hull provide for maximum comfort both under way and at anchor, and ensure that no matter where in the world her owner may choose to take her, the ice stays where it belongs... be that in the ocean, or in a glass.

Northern Star is a yacht built for pleasure, but make no mistake, she is first and foremost a vessel intended to be self-sufficient during extended voyages on the high seas of any latitude and is therefore suitably equipped to handle what ever may come her way. <end>
