Shadow Boats...

Hey all,

Does anyone know if any yacht other than M/Y Lady Lola has a shadow boat??? I have seen images of the boat that trails Lady Lola (hey, Lady Lola was even featured on a Travel Channel special!!!) in magazines and on television, and there is even a site for a company that builds shadow boats.

The boat is at least intriguing, as the owner uses it for most of his tenders as well as his helicopter landing pad and hangar!!!

Is this the wave of the future????

It all depends what you are using your support vessel for. Big sailing boats have often had big motor yachts to carry supply and crew over races.

Like Mariette and Atlantide or Sophie and Black Knight to name the more beautiful.

Eco/Katana was using an oil tanker to be able to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Tatoosh and Le Grand Bleu might be considered as support vessels sometimes.

Gianni Agnellis F100 was maybe the first to be able to land a helicopter and was often used as a tender/shadow to Extra Beat and Stealth.

But the name Shadow I think came with the Golden Shadow, part of what became the Golden Fleet. A couple of pictures;

More info on Shadow Boats…

Stan Antrim, the managing director of Shadow Boats, oversaw the development of Lady Lola’s Shadow. Stan was the captain of Lady Lola and was responsible for the design of her bridge and much of the engineering behind the build. Lady Lola was built by Oceanco and was the yacht of the year in 2002.

Shadow Boats is building yacht support vessels in the tradition of Golden Shadow and the Lady Lola Shadow. The first of their new support vessels will be named Paladin Shadow and will be introduced at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show this year, with the second vessel, Mystere Shadow, following shortly thereafter.

The Shadow vessels start as surplus offshore supply rigs, originally built to service offshore oil drilling platforms. These vessels, some retired and some waiting to be called back into service, are the basic hull & deck structure from which Shadow builds-out superyacht supply platforms. Each is custom built to the specifications and requirements of the buyer and any combination of support equipment can be added.

It appears that these various shadow vessels use hulls fully as large as the primary yacht!

When I first heard about the shadow, it seemed like an over the top concept, but the idea is growing on me. The possibilities are endless and I find myself justifying the expense. The problem for me is the size. These vessels are larger than my boat and I'm unsure how often I would use it.

I'm wondering if they offer smaller vessels? If not, what about a shared ownership program? What about a charter program? I can pull together atleast a half dozen owners in the 100-130' range that would go for this.

We are certainly honored at Shadow Marine to have garnered the attention of Carl and his insightful Forum members. Thanks for the coverage, Carl.

Any and all Forum members will be welcome aboard the Paladin Shadow at the upcoming Ft. Lauderdale show for a first hand experience.

To answer a couple of the queries, we have identified suitable hulls to convert from 90 to 210 feet. We also offer custom new builds of all sizes.

Unlike the LL Shadow, for the Paladin and Mystere I am adding guest suites to the accommodation plan for extra visitors from the yacht (ie., a mother-in-law cabin). This has led us to the reality that these would also be wonderful "Hummer yachts" - very functional, totally enjoyable with significantly reduced maintenance yet ruggedly handsome. Not for everyone but an interesting yachting option.

We are certainly entertaining the concept of offering Shadow charter services. In practise, it is the 100 footer range that really maximizes its options with a Shadow at a mere fraction of what the same services, toys and support would cost on a Clorox Bottle or Wedding Cake yacht. And to share the capability of a Shadow makes ultimate sense. Enjoy the best local marinas and smallest romantic anchorages while having all the capabilities of a 300 footer just a tender ride away on the hook.

Actually, I was wondering what the shadow vessel accomodations were actually like just today as I was reading this thread... they're pretty neat looking from the outside, so I'd imagine some fun could be had inside as well.
